Interesting.
So you are implying that I am the immature one because I am self-aware enough to recognize that I am not good with kids? That's quite the stretch there... Or were you just looking to insult me an didn't want to just come out and say it?

Helping to grow the hobby is something that benefits us all.
I see this posted a lot every time we have a "kiddie" thread. I supposes it's all well an good and a desirable thing to get the next generation into the hobby (the miniaure wargaming hobby that is..as always there is no "GW Hobby" , but I'll leave that onerous task to someone else. In any event there is plenty of scope to bring establshed adult gamers into the Warhammer section of the larger gaming hobby. I started playing 40k as an adult.....well as adult as one can be at 19, which in hindsight is not very much of one. Likewise one of my primary opponents started 40k in his '50s having been a long time historical wargamer and RPer before that.

Ah, let me mention this. I think you are also coming from a different state of mind. You said you got into the hobby at 19, where as many others got into the hobby around 12. So, you never experienced being the kiddie in this case, so you don't have as much toleration for them. It's not wrong, not at all, people have their reasons and I won't shun someone forever because they refuse to play against a 16 year old (like me).

I started playing when I was 11, and I'm only a few years older than that now.
I would, IF they were mature enough to not cheat and not to constantly complain and whine...
In my local gaming group, I will almost always try to not play 1 kid in general, I'd say he's about 12.. maybe a bit younger/older. He constantly cheats and whine... and keeps saying that X army is OP (where X is the army he's versing, even if he's beating them... Oh, and he plays SW, so...)

I see no problem playing with younger people. It depends on the personality rather than age for me. If the kid is throwing hissy fits all the time I'm not going to want to play him, but that would go for adults too.

I'm with Gimble, Maturity matters more to me than age. I'd rather play with someone young who wants to play for fun than someone my age who is WAAC or a rules nazi.

I started this game when I was about 11, back then I had no idea what was going on. Assuming the kid was a good idea of how to play, and what they're doing, and they're not incredibly immature, of course I'd give them a game.
Even if they are slightly that way, maybe by playing with them in a mature and respectful manner would influence them a little bit, who knows?
It's not necessarily age that deters me from wanting to play against someone, it's their level of maturity, or rather, lack of it.
Sometimes the older players can be ridiculous and throw tantrums as much, if not more than you would expect a young child to do so were he in a bad position in the game, or if they disagreed with you.

I've been denied a cat A (Rimfire) license, even though I petitioned only to have it at a shooting range and log for its use.
I'm old enough to be out of high school. (I finished in November at the ripe old age of 16.) does the mean I can't join your play pen until I'm 18 and can vote?
Also, one of the best players at my local store (Mt gravatt) is not older than 15, and he trounced me with bugs.

As long as an adult is helping the younger kids but the kid is still making the decisions I'm ok with it, plus I love when the dad asks if the marines should stay safe in cover or run towards the enemy like a man and I feel obligated to answer the call of manliness and counter charge with my Havocs it always makes the game a bit more exciting that way

is that before or after you have duly slaughtered that new cocky swine who thinks he is the bees kneeks (Dark Eldar are very good for this due to the commonality of marines some new players don't think they might come up against a non-marien army )
We all have our moments etc, but there is a large difference between those who act with maturity, and those who are too cocky for their own good an whine when they get slaughtered. Of course that depends upon how evil you are feeling at the time...
Otherwise age does not matter, their manners etc does, if they are amenable and you can have a good game and they know the rules (newer players i will allow some leeway...) then they are worthy opponents.
Though when i do go into a GW shop (rare these days...), i do see where those younger gamers get a bad reputation- i always overhear conversations etc where they obviosuly know the rules but have no idea about how to devise their army sensibly then they whien when they loses...

I said maybe.
If the kid is known to be mature and responsible, I might be willing to play a game with them.
Not 40k, but I've run fantasy and post-apoc miniatures games at conventions and they've all been aimed at a wide age range. I've probably had nearly as many folks under 16 as over 16 and never had a problem, though kids under 10 usually have a parent along. Also the dynamic is a bit different than a game of 40k since I am the one running the game and pretty much have full control.
On the other hand, my game club is adults only, so outside of conventions I never have to deal with young players.
As an aside, I also never have to deal with pouty, explosive, or whiny adult players. At the club, we're pretty good at using subtle peer pressure (and sometimes direct intervention) to let folks know that kind of behavior isn't accepted. The core members of the group are very much in agreement about the kind of person we want to to game with. It hasn't happened yet, but someone who threw a fit, pitched their dice or some other sort of immaturity would probably get one warning and at second infraction would be asked not to return.
When you only get to game ever other week, it quickly becomes apparent that life's too short to spend your fun time with disagreeable people.

Too late, son. I have already been there...years before you were born. It's a nice country that I would not mind visiting again. Sadly, the draconian gun laws you reference in your post keep it off the short list of places I would ever consider permanently relocating to. But that's another topic of discussion...
I suppose you missed the part of my post above were I asked for there not to be a flood of "but..but...I'm different that the norm!!!11!!" posts. So I'll spell it out for you. You and your 15 year old playmate may very be an exception to the rule and are mature, decently behaved, respectful children (although the snarky tone of your post and the knee-jerk way you seem to have taken my generalizations personally would tend to speak against that). If so, that's great. But the fact remains that even if you don't live down to the stereotype, a much larger number of kids do...the majority in fact. It is the rarity of the exceptions (such as you claim to be) that help to the prove the rule.
Does that clear things up a bit?

Depends entirely on the kid.
I don't play in game stores and none of my group has kids old enough to play 40k, so it's a non-issue for me.

Never underestimate a young player... I'm just saying. My favorite win, as in most satisfying, was in a GT where a guy saw me and told the TO I would be an "easy win". This was day 2 of a grand tournament on the top table of the entire event, and the guy assumed I'd be easy to beat because I was young.
A solid victory later, and this guy spent the whole game being a whiner about it. More immature than anyone I know at my High School, let me tell you. Sure, maybe I'm an "exception to the rule" but I've never seen, played or heard of a truly bad kid to play in the area. Lots of adults though.

8 to 12 is a very differing group of ages. That ranges from when kids have barely any attention span and are pretty hyper to calming down and becoming more and more the nonchelant teenager. Id much rather play a 12 year old than a near impossible to control 8 year old.

It depends. I dislike how people generally accept that all kids are alike. I can get my brother who is 11 to play a good game, but some of my older cousins can't handle it.
