It took CaptainGrey 6 posts to make that point, before recommending that the OP go out and spend £30 on something that he may not even be allowed to field. I'm not sure if CaptainGrey's evangelical promotion of Forgeworld in threads counts as spam but in any case he's on my ignore list.

If your FLGS allows forgeworld, then far and away the best thing you can take for "long range, high Str, low AP large blast" is the FW Artillery carriages.

They don't even compare with the ones available in the codex. rather than a vehicle they are T7, W4, 3+ armour, with FOUR crewman each, for about fifty points LESS.

You should use long range powerful units. Either Leman Russes with Battlecannons, or Medusas. The latter have a shorter range, but are very powerful. Vendettas could be good for moving squads with melta guns, but I haven't tried that.
