Now, for some advise (for me) more on the original topic...
Im starting Cygnar, heres what Im thinking of starting with:
Starter box
swap caster for Nemo
Stormwall (in larger games)
So my question(s) are:
Which heavy jack is better for ranged firepower, Avenger or Defender?
Which infantry unit is good for general support? Ill be facing Nemoth & Cryx most often, but I want to keep a generally balanced force.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

The Avenger & Defender are totally different machines. The Avenger has a short ranged gun, with an AoE. Mostly suited for aiming at enemy infantry and a solid beats at P+S 18.
The Defender is a is +1 POW on the gun and has one of the longest ranges in the entire game, more suited for peppering enemy armor at a distance.
Asking what the best unit is also rather hard to nail down. It depends which 'Jacks you're bringing and what they cover, you need to compliment that. There aren't really any catch-all choices. Except maybe the Black 13th, they're just good times.

Of the two, I like the Avenger. Knockdown is pretty powerful and can make your subsequent shots/melee attacks into the models hit by it much more deadly.
Outside of those 2. I'd reccomend a Stormclad and a unit of Stormblades with their UA. The Stormblades can Jack Marshal the Stormclad, giving it a psuedo-focus, and the Stormclad also gets a free point of Focus just for standing near the Stormblades. Thats basically 2 free points of focus for it each turn.

If youre getting Nemo consider the Stormstrider

Which Nemo are you using? the three have different needs to be addressed in their lists.
Commander Nemo likes to have a normal 2-3 jacks and relies heavily on one, which he supercharges with five focus. He needs infantry to cover his flanks and wants magic-casting models with him to gain power tokens.
General Nemo likes multiple melee jacks and buffs several to perform different purposes. He wants anything that helps his jacks survive to engage what they want. A few ranged or hybrid jacks also work well for him, but getting those robots into melee is his main purpose.
Artificer Nemo and Finch love to have 3-4 jacks around and play the ranged game better than the other two incarnations. He loves all of those electro-leaps and electric guns. He has some upkeeps to support melee jacks too, but absolutely nothing for infantry.
If you are playing general or commander Nemo the squire is a good buy, but artificer Nemo can't take it since he comes with Finch.

I'd probably say General Nemo is the most straightforward for a new player.

I dont have any version yet, but I do believe General Nemo was suggested by someone else as well.

From my experience most warcasters don't like alot of jacks because of how focus works. Khador in particular tend to like more infantry.
Cygnar casters don't neccesarily like alot of jacks in their battlegroups with a couple of exceptions, but have some very good jack marshalls and the Jr. Warcaster. Generally Jr. and the marshalls will want to run single shot shooting jacks, though. Big melee bruisers will go with a caster who again usually only really want one.
If you really like lots of big nasty gribblies then you may want to look at Hordes. Warlocks tend to want to run multiple warbeasts due to the fury mechanic.
And the Stormwall is a sweet sweet model. Looks cool and the rules are nice, too. And there are a few casters who really dig the big guy.

Thanks and no worries about building the colossal, Im quite experienced with resin kits. Hardest I built was a Dreamforge Crusader, which had far more pieces than the colossal, including hydraulics that had to be measured and cut to fit once a pose was chosen. Of course now those are plastic kits...

The Colossals do have a fair amount of Flash, and very large plugs in some places, just as a word of warning.

Still can't wait for Cygnar to get a heavy war jack with a lightning cannon with longer than 8" of range.
Yeah I know the Stormclad can shoot things. But I want something with a bit more of a bite. Of course, I've got my Storm Strider for that as well, soooo... and there is the Thunderhead...
Sigh. So hard to be satisfied sometimes, you can always dream of that one ideal Cygnar unit that you want more.

I"m waiting to buy a stormwall, but only because I bought big when I started, and I want to paint what I have before I buy new stuff. I mean, things like the Black 13th, Squire, and Rienholdt were too essential and cheap not to pick up, but when you've got over 100pts in the queue, it's good to have a reward waiting.

Its not too bad really, my Stormwall has less than my buddies Judicator.
So far I have:
Starter box
heavy jack kit ( going to be a Defender)
Stormwall
I wanted to get a Squire and/or Journeyman caster, but the store didnt have either, so I have to order them online. Thinkinkg of picking up the card set so I can test out other casters before buying the minis.
