Why did I start my army?
Somewhere in the early 00's I discovered WHFB, and started out with Warriors of Chaos, because they were the coolest. I liked the fat armor and big axes. After a loooong break I returned last year, this time trying 40k. And those big suits of armour, horned helmets and big axes still appealed to me, so CSM was the natural choice. Then I read up on the fluff, and discovered that I actually like that as well. No other armies really appeal to me at the moment, I'm quite picky.

Does it have a theme?
My first batch of CSM were Red Corsairs. I was going to write up my own legion at first, but the concept of Huron Blackheart's space pirates appealed more to me. Unfortunately I didn't know much else about the Legion, what their tactics and preferred units and such were, so I ended up with a really mixed up army that wasn't super fun to play. I needed structure, guidelines. So I took another short break, bought me some Plague Marines and discovered they're awesomely more fun to paint! So I started over with a Death Guard list that I'm still working on. I just got the FW conversion sets for marines and termies so I'm really excited about them.

Does it have a back story?
Well, the Death Guard have a pretty long story, and I like it as it is. I'll try to work in Typhus' old Death Shroud squad, though. His elite TDA bodyguards. Also his horde of plague zombies are modelled after various Guardsmen models, from previous battles that he's dragged along as plague hosts.
Usually I like to work in fluffy things, like each marine's personality and such, but it's much harder with Death Guard, since they're all rotting fatsoes without any charisma. Do you have any suggestions?

Do I still like my army?
Well, as mentioned there isn't much fluffy stuff to personalize my own army from, other than a plague-ridden wall of death, which is exactly what the Death Guard are. I haven't played with it yet, but I try my best to make it as fun to play with, and against, as possible. It might be OP at first glance, but I've left several weak spots in it for my opponents to find. So fluff-wise, I don't like it that much. Gaming-wise I think I will love it, though.

Why did you start your army?

When I first came across to 40k, the Catachan plastics were coming out but I was drawn to the more 'sensible' looking Cadians, however the metal figures were just out of my price range at the time. Come plastic Cadians, I started to build. Problem is I can jump very rapidly from army to army so they've been a very long term project but the only army that's always stayed.

Does it have a theme?

Its inspired by the interwar armies of Central Europe - the 'little guys' like the Czechoslovak and Polish armies who I always thought had a cool, different look to the normal German/Russian/American inspiration a lot of players draw on. This means giving heavy weapons proper gun carriages, giving officers a more aristocratic look etc plus modding their armour and helmets in general. The world they're from is relatively 'nice' one as it has sub-hive cities, the environment isn't a hell hole etc. but the government is an Orwellian/Kafkaesque nightmare meaning my Veterans are depicted as secret police elites and whenever I've used conscripts they've been a 'people's militia' of ideological nutters. Also I have masochistic attachment to Rough Riders, and I dress them up with Uhlan hats and try again to make them look like the old aristocratic elite.

Does it have a back story?

Very much so, heavily linked with the above, I'm mad for fluff. The regiment has fought on Armageddon but was moved to combat the Tyranids. Being heavily decimated they've become the garrison for a small, somewhat backwards world - allowing for adding a bit of colour as they adept to the odd locale.

Do you still like your Army?

Very much, they've been on hiatus for a very long time, and I hope to build them back up.

Ive always been an Orc in any game that allowed me too, its just always been my thing i dont know why exactly. Thats part of what sucked me into WoW for 6 bloody years was it was the first MMO to let me be an orc, and i ran as an orc warrior for most of those years.

So naturally i went with Orks because Orksies be Kewl - anyway theyre just hilarious, their technology is "WTF?" worthy, its really easy to make orky conversions, and face it theyre hilarious (did i mention theyre hilarious?)
I really have no theme with them, or clan for that matter. If i had to label them it would be the Evil Sunz since theyre all cladded in red armor. Looking back, i kinda wish i went with an unusual paint-theme just to make my boyz stand out even more (like Blue skin and Purple armor ) but i really dont feel like repainting 100+ models lol.

I wanted to play Tau because i was heavily into Mech Anime and Manga at the time, hell i still am.
I loved the idea of having a whole mechsuit army bouncing around with superior technology carrying out covert missions for the Greater Good.
Not always on the right side of morality but for the Greater Good none the less. The Black Ops of the Tau Empire
I still love playing my Tau, after playing them for 4 years straight i've decided to give them a rest until their new codex hopefully this summer...but i have to say this thread has got me itching to play them again.

My second army is GK Draigowing. I have to admit i developed this army just for tournaments. Its fun but not as fluffy as the Tau, in which i will take units purely because i like them, not because they are competitive (stealth units).
That said I love the multitude of different strategies i can pull out with 2k draigo wing. It is always entertaining to see an army with 19 models (2 MC, 1 flyer, Draigo and 16 troops) decimate armies 4x their size and come out with minimal casualties. I like how unforgiving it is for mistakes and how every plan has to be executed with upmost precision or risk failure. Not as lovable as the Tau (especially by opponents) but it sure makes a general feel elite on the battlefield.

Why did you start your army? Does it have a theme? Does it have a back story? Do you still like your Army?

I started in 2009, right around the settling of 5th edition. My friend had vanilla marines, eldar, and tau. I laughed at the tiny models with so many guns and bought the scariest bugs I could find. My first purchase outside of my battleforce was a trygon, haha.

It is snow-themed.

Hive Fleet Managarmr is a splinter fleet of Kraken that crashed onto an ice moon outside of the Ichar IV / Iyanden area. They slowly began to adapt through their hibernation inside the wrecked ship, but were awoken by an exploratory Deathwatch team. Now, they constantly clash with the Blood Angels that flood in from nearby Baal. We tried to align my and my roommate's modeling schemes and storylines together.

I love my Nids. I own some Space Wolves, but I honestly do not enjoy playing any other army. I like the challenges and rewards inherent to the bugs.

Stealthy Dark Angels Scout with Shotgun

Being digested by a Tyranid.

Why did you start your army?: around six months ago, I was introduced to the game by a friend. He was a salamanders player and showed me some of the various chapters. I saw dark angels and I knew that was the army for me. I loved the robed knight look they had and picked up a veteran pack that same day (and proceeded to screw them up while priming, but hey, I was new.)

Does it have a theme?: I've tried to give it one, I lean more towards the knightly aspect of the DA than their monastic parts. My command squad and belial conversion are made from the GK termy kit and draigo, respectively.

Does it have a back story?: I am trying to flesh out my DA, who I have decided are a successor chapter (Mainly because I lacked caliban green at the time and I like my current color scheme of black with gold trim.) who are descended from those who did not side with Luther on Caliban. So far, I've decided to have them as fleet-based and on a losing streak (to reflect my early games )

Do you still like your army: O' course ye git! Compounded by the new units available (I love DW Knights) I've been growing my collection slowly, I'm pretty close to a full battle company, and I have around half of a deathwing-equivalent company as well. I absolutely love my army, I just need to get better at painting

and as a farewell, as the obligatory battle cry:

For the Lion! For Caliban! For the Emperor!
