My fluffy Dark Eldar Kabal are brutal as all hell (although they suffer from the fragility issues all DE feel). On the other hand, I struggle with my CSM, but CSM always struggle :(

Essentially, if you have a Top Tier codex or your fluff involves spamming the most Top Tier units in the codex. It works.

If you want to run a word bearer army with Possessed, an apostle, spawn, with cultists and standard CSM. it will not.

Essentially, it comes down less to fluff, and more "Is my fluff based around Top-Tier Units so I can say I'm running a fluffy army and still laugh at people saying fluffy sucks."

(All of these without Chaos Daemons mind you)

Running Mono-Tzeentch ? Hahahaha

Running Mono-Nurgle? Competitive!

Running Mono-Khorne? Hahahaha

Running Mono-Slaanesh? Somewhere in the middle.

Running any of those while spamming three Hel-drakes, somewhere up there near competitive.

I've seen Tzeentchian lists do relatively well, the key, it seems, is not to use Thousand Sons much, or at all (oddly enough), they're too much of a point sink.

But Ahriman, Tzeentch daemon allies, and some vanilla chaos marines or maybe a small squad of Thousand Sons can do alright.

Khorne is the only Chaos alignment I'd consider wholly ineffectual, 'zerkers just aren't intimidating at all, and their marks don't measure up to the alternatives.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Well, I haven't had any success trying to use fluffy BT lists, that's for sure. I suppose it isn't surprising, considering even minmaxed BT lists are barely making do. I do have plans for trying again now with the added fliers, but that's a discussion for another topic.

My current Necron/Chaos list is very fluffy and very, very nasty.

The fluff? The Chaos' home system is being invaded by Necrons, and the Magistra (counts-as Ahriman) and the Overlord (Counts-as Zahndrek) have developed a bitter rivalry - often a case of "You will die by MY hand! No other!". The army list?

A big unit of Thousand Sons, a minimum unit of Tzeentch Cultists, Ahriman, Zahndrek, an Overlord, two squads of Immortals with Veiltek and Court Lord with Warscythe, Mindshackles and ResOrb, and two Doom Scythes.

What? A Necron list with no Annihilation Barges or Night Scythes? A Chaos ally detachment focussing on Thousand Sons?! Zahndrek without Obyron?! Ahriman, when (s)he's NOT the warlord?!

Despite the fact that it's a 'subpar' list, with 'odd' fluff, it works quite well.

Of course, they don't do as well as my very fluffy Sisters of Battle army, with whom I only ever lose if I'm being a complete idiot (which does happen. >< I once charged two penitent engines into an assault marine squad when there were tactical terminators RIGHT THERE....)

Well, not every game needs to be competitive, really. If I had to play all of my games as a tournament style, I'd probably hate the game, because smash-your-face armies just aren't as fun as something that's thought out. I like seeing 'uncompetative' units on the field, like Howling Banshees and Kroot. I love seeing 'fluffy' armies, because I love the story of the 40k universe (as stuck in limbo as it is) and I'd rather enjoy a game where tactics win the day then a single tactic repeated through an entire list, or one cheesy unit (or three) like the Helldrake.
I know, most people like to play tournament lists, but that's just my two cents. I feel that there are a few fluffy army lists that can be competitive, but they're sorely few and far between.

Games Workshop - Just because a dog is in the doghouse doesn't mean you don't care for them anymore. But when they crap on the floor over and over again, you need to make it clear that their behaviour won't be tolerated.

Sorry i havent bothered reading any of the comments but this is my 20 cents. Who cares? honestly do what you want, i play a fluffy guard list, i try and make it like a proper Company in the Australian defence force, a command squad, 2 Infantry platoons of 40 odd troops each with heavy weapons and a mechanized detachment for fire support. if your army competative or not dosent have atleast some fluff behind it then in my opinion your playing the game for the wrong reason.

All you have to do is have a good enough imagination to come up for a reason for why you run melta vets in valkyries with a leman russ and artillary detachement and who cares if someone says its cheesy BS, aslong as your happy with your army and you have a reason for doing it (fluff related) then thats a fuffy comepative army The beauty of this game is aslong as you spend your money on a unit you can make whatever type of army you want.
