The fluff doesn't say they only recovered his hand. It says that they recovered his remains, and that his hand is kept on display.

You know, I actually never noticed that this is the actual wording - I always understood it as them only having recovered his hand as well, but looking at the sentence in the Index Astartes itself, you are entirely correct.
