Well personally I'd prefer that if a kit existed for the unit that a few bits from it were actually used. Mostly for recognition though, I don't care if you stretch 1 Deff Dreads parts into making 3 of them as long as they look good I guess the Rule of Cool is indeed in effect, even with Orkz as half-haphazardly welded/nailed together as the official kits look, just gluing on random plastic card doesn't make them instant win.

In this particular example, it doesn't take a lot of effort to remember that the orkified Marine Dreadnought is an Ork Dreadnought.

Just as long as it isn't something like you showing up with 3 papercraft Stormtalons, which I have seen. Cute for a friendly game, but otherwise just a cheap way to cheeze.

I've seen papercraft that looks nearly indistinguishable from the original models, until you pick them up. Given the amount of effort that goes into them, I have no problem with playing against them.

Nor do I see an issue with people trying to find cheaper ways to field the army they want, so long as stuff looks like what it is supposed to be.

( O P) This is an elites remark in my eyes since converting and scratchbuilding make the hobby fun. Some of the best armies I have seen are heavily converted. Also, with the rising price of GW mini's I have no problem facing an army with lots of scratch built stuff as long as the unit type is clear at a glance, and the scratch build was not built to take advantage of some loophole in the game.

However, playing with someone who fields shampoo bottles for grav tanks is a little bit janky. At least invest enough time to make the shampoo bottle look good. I saw an eldar titan made out of tooth brush handles etc. Looked awesome.

I've only ever had the reaction between "that's neat" and "awesome!" for my stuff. Unless the work I did was really crappy, I'd certainly take offense to opponents badmouthing my hobbywork.

Furthermore, I've seen some conversions before of very dubious execution, but I've never taken a stand against them on principle, nor would I ever. If you're going to all the effort to learn how to use greenstuff and plasticard, then you already get props in my book.

Agreed, plasticard and greenstuff isnt easy to use. Greenstuff grabs your finger prints easy as hell and plasticard is difficult to use in more than a simple plate of armor that has no bend or very little detail in it. First time i touched greenstuff for more than moving a shoulder around it looked horrific since it looked fleshy on a metal bit lol...now i think im fairly good at it.
Not to toot my own horn but all ive gotten for my work is "Holy sh** dude!" lol

Even if the conversion seemed a lot like a scheme to save money, I would still let him play. Besides, in case of a deffdread made out of a aobr dreadnought with a ork glyph on its left cheek tournies would allow it because it is mostly GW, plasticard, or sculpted.

I do not mind conversions. Personally, a lot of my army used to be a lot of terrible conversion. Which I am in the process of tearing apart and rebuilding.

I don't understand why anyone would complain about a converted model unless it was unfair in anyway. If someone took the time and worked to slowly learn how to convert/scratchbuild a model, learning how to use GS and plasticard, the only valid comments are constructive one, talk about how you don't like something and why and how you think he could improve.

Seriously, some people are dumbasses.

I guess he'd loathe my scratchbuilt inquisitors, obliterators, sorceresses...

Seriously. Building stuff is one of the best parts of this hobby and if you can combine bits of other kits - especially left over bits - then power to you! As long as it's awesome, who cares if you didn't pay through the nose for it?

Actually, no! It's even better if you managed to Beat the System to build something awesome without having to give away lots of money.

If someone genuinely can't afford the hobby, but has the dedication to scratch build models (especially to look like GW) then more power to them.

Same with someone who might be able to afford it, but wants to get better at scratch building.

But if some rich kid pays another person to scratch build models just to skirt cost, then ridicule them relentlessly.

Wait wait wait. You were playing Orkz and he got mad at you for SCRATCHBUILDING??

Dude, I don't know what to tell you. I've only seen a handful of actual Ork vehicles at my FLGS, everything else was converted from something else. Like Land Raiders becoming Battle Wagons and whatnot. I mean, that's what Orkz DO.

Frankly there are too few players to be complaining about some scratch built stuff. Come on those of you that do not like scratch built armies wouldnt you rather play with your toys then just look at them because of a lack of players?

I don't give a crap if someone wants to use a scratch built model. Heck with the price of some of this stuff I don't blame them.

I'm actually building an Ork Stompa right now from scratch myself. I think it's more of an achievement to build something from scratch no matter how crappy than just going out and paying for one.

THE COWARDZ, THE FEWL. But honestly they ARE fools.

Does that look cheap or ugly? Orks and Chaos are the most imaginative and creative armies out there and they scorn you for it? Next time they pull a fast one on you remind them that at least you put the extra mile to make something original, unique and beautiful.

it needs a finished paintjob but the construction is definately orky. If thats not a looted wagon, wtf is lol. Too bad Looted Wagon doesnt have the Skimmer option (which i find stupid, it would make them sooooo much better even if its another 15pts)

If someone goes to the effort of hosting a tourney/game I want to play in, I respect their right to tell me what I can/cannot put on the table. It's their sandbox.

When dealing with one of the socially inept few who feel obliged to define what is right or wrong in a fictional universe represented by toy soldiers, well, who really cares. The breed isn't limited to 40K, or even sci-fi and fantasy. I've been questioned about the number of buttons painted on 15mm soldiers. My reply is, as they say, unprintable.
