An easy way to base smaller figures, if they're already painted prior to basing, I've found, is using woodfiller.
First you score the base (mainly if it's shiny plastic, gives filler some grip), cover base in the right coloured filler (I use lightish brown).
Once base is covered, take the figures you wish to put on the base, and just push them in to the filler till the models base hits the basing (in my case, the 30x30mm square plastic).
Then, using an old brush, gently push the filler that's been pushed aside and upwards, over the lip of the models base.
Wait for it to dry (mine takes about 3 hours or so), then wash it with a brown wash (I use army painter soft tone). Once dry, drybrush that with a bone colour.
It's easy for mass basing, relatively quick (other than waiting to dry!), looks nice and has the added bonus of if you need to rebase the models in future, they're not superglued down at all. The filler will easily hold them securely for play and whatnot, but taking them off wont be overly difficult.
