Though I have 5 armies im collecting for 40k...I typically will buy a new kit, look at it, then put it in a giant box until im ready to build it. I never like to build things unless I can devote the time to paint it entirely. I have found if you build everything and then paint, its sort of discouraging and you lose focus. By keeping things unassembled it allows you to think about the colors you want to use, adding conversions, how to base the models, etc etc while you are painting a current project. Not that this matters too much, but it also keeps resale value relatively high....incase you decide you want to transition or change to another army midway through your project. I actually did that with Eldar jetbikes...instead of opening them, I kept them sealed while I was working on other projects,,,then eventually just decided I didnt need them in the army. I ALWAYS advocate, especially with new players, to build and paint 1 sqd at a time. I have played against far too many 'plastic' armies that players have rushed to assemble and get on the field just to play....if you do that, your missing a huge aspect of what makes 40k great.

This may be in the wrong place to say it, but I totally agree with the above quote... especially the last line. The painting actually makes 40K a great hobby and is certainly a HUGE part of the hobby, besides gaming of course.

I once maxed out about 10k of credit cards on Warhammer and Warhammer 40k. At my height, I had 8 40k armies and at least 2-3 fantasy armies. I have about 2000-2500 points in Imperial Fists(5 models are primed and based yellow, everything else upainted, mostly unassembled). I have more Dreadnaughts than you can field. I once found a Landraider that I forgot I had.

I'm always finding models that I forgot about, I'm just waiting to find an entire army I forgot about.

I always like these "what's not painted" threads as it reminds me that I'm not alone in my piles of unpainted lead (and some plastic).

I don't have a count, but I'm probably looking at about
300-500 unpainted figures
20 Unpainted Vehicles

It's my best guess that half of wargamers who have been gaming for more than a few years probably have as much or more unpainted as painted.

I am not even going to list it. I have 18,000+ points of Eldar, of which maybe 2000 points is painted or nearly painted by me, plus some more painted by other people.

I have about 10,000 points of marines, and not even 1000 points ready for the table.

Maybe 3000 points of Orks, and nothing finished at all.

I have a mixture of painted and unpainted DnD models, and quite a lot of WFB Chaos Champions. Mind you, I bought them to own rather than to game with.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Hmm and I thought mine was kinda bad, but seems like my situation is great!

Here's the list.

Imperial Guard
- 8 Infantry Squads
- 2 Autocannon heavy weapon teams
- 3 mortar crews
- 30 conscripts
- 1 chimera

I've painted approximately 50% of my guard. Guard is my number 1 project at the moment.

Here's the second list.

Space Marines
- 1 Tac squad
- 5 terminators
- 1 captain
- 25 scouts
- 2 land speeder storms with their crews

I just ordered scouts and land speeders to that project. I got a "flow moment" and created this SM army theme. Based on movie Black Hawk Down. Hope I get those figures right and they look awesome.

Then, the third project is my dwarf battalion, but it will take few months until I get to paint those.

it's not even worth the time to add everything up...

I have my entire Chaos Daemons army to paint bar one cavalry model (I painted my Seeker Alluress), and they are all assembled, apart from my mounted Herald of Slaanesh.

Why? Because every single model (apart from most of the Diaz Seekers) is (or needs to finish being) converted. :\ I decided to convert everybody first to get an idea of the whole look for the army, since it's a counts-as for a different Chaos god...

On the bright side, it's only 1500points, or was in 5th edition anyway. Who knows how many extra models I'll need to convert and paint to get it up to that level again in 6th.

Oh, and I bought 99% of my Diaz models brand new.
