saying Canada is the true birthplace of warriors is like saying the Renaissance originated in Sweden.

We do now. Once upon a time we kept a load of them to put up all the scaffolding all over the country.

Back to topic;

Thanks for the responses everyone. A range of opinions put forward, about half of the typical Dakka nature, including the allways present list-bashing stuff (which I clearly wasn't looking for).

I'm of the opinion i've been turning up to social and friendly games with a competitive (by eldar standards) list. I'll try to keep things a bit softer from now on. So, of the games that i've won, here's the lists i've played;

Noisemarines in Rhinos. 2 Predators
Grey Knights - 2 LR's, Dreadnought, Pallys and terminators
Tyranid Big Bugs - 2 Tyrants, 2 Tervigons, 2 Trygons
Deathwing - All terminators and a Dread
Guard (twice) - big blob, chimeras and hellhounds. Marbo and Vets.
Vanilla Marines (twice) - 3 squads of tacs, 2 stormtalons, terminators
World Eaters - 3 squads of zerkers, Kharn, Landraider

And some other stuff I forget.

So yeah, i've got that tournament in a fortnight. I've got my list almost sorted and am frantically painting everything up. I'll be sure to post how I go.

Cheers

I play eldar and just wanted to say that eldar are one of the most tactically rewarding armies to play as they require a higher level of understanding to field, however each unit you bring has a specific purpose, and you will lose if you place any unit in the wrong situation. Farseers are the strength of your army, as they bring a certain level of buffing abilities to eliminate key weaknesses. Maintain a force that has units for everything your opponent may bring to the table. Eldar are single in purpose and often single use, as they die to small arms fire, however they pack a punch so, minimize your weaknesses before you maximize your strengths, and you will continue to win. I have roughly an 85% percent win ratio, and I play weekly competitive. Go zenos!

It is the rule in war, if ten times the enemy's strength, surround them; if five times, attack them; if double, be able to divide them; if equal, engage them; if fewer, be able to evade them; if weaker, be able to avoid them. - Sun Tzu

I had the opposite experience. Won my first three games then lost for a year

Sounds like you've just got a solid hand on target priority.

And your opponents don't know how to "peel the onion" of an eldar army.

Well his list doesn't quite have a weak spot so it's hard for an inexperienced opponent to know what to focus.

Of course a good player would just slaughter the guardians and hold objectives, but this might be hard if he puts them in the backfield and rushes up with the rest of his force.

Okay, so it's now the evening following the second day of the aforementioned tournament.

I placed 6th overall, out of 14 players (very small turn out), and I was equal 3rd on generalship, having won 4/6 games.

So yeah, I think I said really well.

Game 1, I won against a daemon army. My runes were too strong for his psykers, and it was a bit of a hard counter for his list.

Game 2, I faced a blood angel/vanilla marine army. Stern guard, assault marines, 2 baals, and a vindicator. I would have won if they game went to turn 6. Close game, I was unlucky loosing eldrad on turn 1 to a pedro blast. Fortune didn't help. Tis guy is ranked 5th in my state, so I was still happy with the result.

Game 3, against a guard army. 2 vendettas, exterminator, and a parking lot of tanks. Easy win, my fire dragon exarch on the quad was awesome.

Game 4, another guard army, 3 vendettas, russ, 2 manticores, blob. I won, manticores scare me now. Close win, I didn't have my scoring left, and he only had 1 squad left to score with. I got a bit lucky.

Game 5, taudar. I lost. 3 skyrays, 2 riptide, farsight, eldrad, and a ethereal. He seized and killed my walkers, and quad. I lost all my Dakka in a short time. I managed to avoid getting tabled, just. Eldrad mind warred a riptide dead, then was killed in combat by the other. This guy was the eventual winner, being undefeated.

Game 6, more guard. A vendetta, marbo, 2 manticores, hellhound, and like...6 chimeras. I won 5-4, having won first blood. Fire dragon exarch was a boss, getting a kill each and every turn, except for turn 6. If the game had ended on turn 5, I'd have lost. Absolute cracking game. Grudge matching him sometime.

So yeah,first tournament, with a 7 year old "uncompetitive codex". I'm well happy with the result.

I kinda wish I'd faced the non guard competitive lists to see how I fare. There was a gk dual dread knight army, and a wraith wing list too. Would have been interesting to play them.

Just thought I'd update this thread for those interested. Cheers.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

Not a bad showing for your first tournament.

The losses will be more educational in the long run than the wins if you consider where you went wrong and how you could have changed your tactics in that light.

Seems like you're off to a good start, though.

It's not a bad thing that you keep winning. As long as you can lose with grace, and don't run a really OP list, you should be good.
