The 5 melta 5 flamer is a pretty good compromise.

It lets your suicide unit excel at both roles (with vulkan at least-its like having 2 melta/flamer due to rerolls)

Even 1 drop pod is great. So what if the unit suicides, because sternguard drops are so devastating, I think that alone almost single handed ensured that most armies ran very few armour. The ability to force your oppponent to change his entire deployment because of fear of your drop pods can't be under emphasized.
I just had one game recently. He had a drop pod of death (5 sternguard, 5 meltas). I got to go first and he let me go first. After carefully deploying my entire army in a castled position with infantry forming a protective bubble, I couldn't even move at all from that position in my first turn, because I knew his pod was coming down, and I absolutely needed to protect my armour.
So he had no good armored targets for his pod, he still dropped it right in front of my Aegis Icarus Lascannon, and proceeded to blow that up...
Maybe its expensive, but even 1 pod's impact cannot be under estimated. Drop pods are crazy good in 6th ed.

I don't change my lists because drop pods exist. I expect to take damage of the course of the game.

This is encouraging, I will be sure to be bold with it. Although id hope to take out more than a 35 pt gun from a 150pyt unit. Automatically Appended Next Post: Thatguyhsagun wrote:It lets your suicide unit excel at both roles (with vulkan at least-its like having 2 melta/flamer due to rerolls)
I wonder if lysander would also be a decent option to take. Youd be re rolling the special ammunition and not the combis, but would still be devestating if you were within rapid fire range.

So where would you place that first (locator beacon carrying) drop pod? Or, I guess my real question is: where would you place it so that you can bring in reserves from then on within 6" of it? I really suck at Deep Strike placement--I usually drop my Terminators right into a killing zone, it seems. So, any advice as to how to work this well would be appreciated.
Also, back to the OP, I actually echo some others in saying that I think that even with one Drop Pod, if you DO have a tank-heavy list, trundling towards your army, you are going to get more value than a simple suicide. The Combi-meltas seem like a must-have so you can blast something valuable, but if you accomplish that and serve as a distraction while your main mechanized force crosses the field or destroys targets, I think that's a valuable tactical sacrifice to make.
Furthermore, at 35 points a pop, Drop Pods aren't going to add that much to your list, so you probably wouldn't have to change that much in terms of selection to take two or even three of them. So all is not lost either way, I think.

How would you equip a suicide dread? They are a bit cheaper then DA vets with combimelta so i´d like to give it a go.

I usually run my dread (when I run him these days) with a multimelta and heavy flamer/combat weapon. (For 150 points after the pod is figured in.) That's usually enough to wipe out a single unit, either a vehicle or an infantry unit, depending on what my target was. I'm not a huge fan of kamikaze units though, so I don't run him that often.
