All my stuff has been sand colored.... I came on active duty in '91. My first unit was 1st Cav at Ft Hood and if a vehicle came in woodland camo it went to the paint shop before it was issued. We used to get parts that were green once in a while though so you could see a tank with a couple green road wheels or a green track skirt piece or fender (not the heavy ballistic/armored skirts, just the thin sheet metal ones).

You can see my unit here (NOTE: TURN YOUR SPEAKERS OFF BEFORE PLAYING. THE MUSIC SUCKS!!!!):

A31 is my track and the shot of the goofy TC with glasses is me. My tank is the one that does the 'jump' in the beginning.

Another source of modern 15mm vehicles is Khurasan (M1A2s, some hummers, and soon will have some soviet tanks and Strykers) and Irish Serb: https://sites.google.com/site/irishserbsminiatures/

Haha!! Awesome you were a Cavalryman! Thanks for the link, I saw that one on Google Images and was unsure if it was US or Bundeswehr.

If you want you could critique my 1986 CAVALRY Orbat/ TOE and Formation builder here (Apache is a bit early but I'll let that one slide).

It's page 4, If the Platoon units are wrong let me know and I will change it for Version 4 release.

Love the Cav, it's all about Armour and Mech working together, with Air and Artillery seamlessly Integrated. Small hard punching units, with all the support.

The whole Troop > Squadron > Regiment thing I've always liked.

I think the UK should move over to this Model for our mechanised forces, because we are still organised along Heavy Tank Battalions and Brigades.

Our own Cavalry formations tend to be Armoured Recce, with a few Notable exceptions but these are Tank only and don't integrate, Artillery, Air and Mechanised Forces in one structure.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Capt Jake, and all other prior service types, and esp you OP... I STRONGLY recommend the modern 'Force on Force' rules from Ambush Alley Games.
While set for more of a skirmish game, once you get the 'reaction system' rules down (and it takes some outside the box thinkin') its a great set for kinetic or asymmetrical warfare. Plys quick, and keeps both sides engaged throughout the turns.
Also, was written by a vet, and playtested by a bunch of us.

And no, I don't benefit from anyone buying it, or for talking it up.

I suspect you may find my name listed as a play tester in that book... I also wrote the tactics portion included in it.

I love Force on Force from an Infantry Perspective. But from an Armoured Warfare type Cold War perspective it just didn't work. I bought all the books and tried to shoe horn it, it didn't work. It's a great book, but it is (quite rightly) Infantry Centric. I wanted the ability to field Battlegroups, Kampfgruppes or the whole of Team Yankee type thing. You know the Whole Major in Command of a like 20 Vehicles and unfortunately it doesn;t work with Force on Force.

Plus I think FOrce on Force is more suited to 20mm, as stands of infantry like Flames of War cannot be easily used due to reactions and the individual Wounding elements. I've seen it done in 15mm, but it's actually cheaper and easier to do it in 1/72 or 20mm.

I did speak to Big P about it (as he wrote the original rules which were fudged about a bit in Force on Force). I decided in the end to adapt the Flames of War Rules to implement large scale battles like this:-

FoF works best when the player takes on the role of Platoon leader with reinforcements or a company commander minus a platoon or so. I like the way it handles armor, but armor really works best (in the game) as support to an infantry force.

For my armor heavy games I've been using Cold War Commander with my 1/600 stuff. I can field a full US Combined Arms BN, an Iranian Armored Brigade, and have some work done on an Israeli armored BDE (two tank BNs and some of their support assets done).

That is my modern forces... I'm actually thinking of selling them off along with a crap ton of unpainted stuff (the rest of the Israelis and the makings of some Syrians, as well as some more US...

I like the massed look the little figs give, and the fact that I can have tanks engaging at somewhat 'real' looking distances. But, these guys are sitting unused and have been for a while.

I wished we lived near each other, there would be some Serious BLUFOR vs OPFOR Wargames scenarios going down.

My favourite part of Staff College was the Wargaming, which I invariably kicked ass in. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of Flames of War...

I picked up Force on Force as well and it is a cool game, the reaction system is the neatest thing about it. We came to find we couldnt keep the turns straight and had a hard time calculating all the bonuses and remembering who gets what and stuff like that. The Injury system needs some work, but overall I like where the game is headed. It needs a 2nd edition written by someone who can write rules. The book is well written, just not well organized. Our gaming group only has about 3 hrs to play and we couldnt finish a game using FoF when we got more than about 3 units of boys on a side. Not a knock, just realized FoF works best in smaller games. Our group wants to do big battles.

I find it works well for big games (well, platoon on platoon. Any bigger and it gets a bit clunky if you want a 1:1 representation). But you're right, the rules need better organization. They are great rules, but they are written in a weird order. Big games can be done once everyone is fully comfortable with the rules that will be in use
