Yep, I don't like PP's plastic. It's kinda' rounded and weird.

I think that's more the style of the models.

I just started the switch from 40k to Warmachines and... well, I've gone from hating the Warmahordes aesthetic to really enjoying it. The art style is simply what drives the models to look like they do. I've had very little issue with lack of detail - I think it makes the game easier on the eyes and makes the important details pop out more.
The statement I'd make would be that PP makes models for their game whereas GW makes models and just happens to release a ruleset with it. It could be that I'm playing Menoth - we seem to have plenty of nicely detailed models going on.
Anyways, I prefer the simple aesthetic. Getting tired of the CONSTANT GRIMDARK WAR IN THE FAR DISTANT FUTURE WHERE EVERYONE HAS EVERYONE ELSES SKULLS GLUED ONTO THEIR SKULL.
SKULLS FOR THE SKULL SKULL AND SKULLS FOR THE SKULL GOD

Warmachine? Realistic and practical? Really? They have a bunch of stylized robots and weapons that don't make any sense; walking tanks that for some reason carry weapons in hands instead of just having weapon limbs (mercs and protectorate excepted since they have stories about it); tiny little legs that would sink through the ground with great big gorilla torsoes, inconsistent proportions, and just plain arbitrary anatomy.
And GW has the exact same thing, what is your point here? I just stated that I prefer the clutter free look of warmachine to the overly ornate looks of other companies, where have I mentioned anything regarding proportions, or if there is anything remotely realistic about using giant hulking steam powered robots in actual battles?
spiralingcadaver wrote:
Thing is, skulls, scrolls, and filigree is to Warhammer as rivets, trim, and filigree is to Warmachine. They're different versions of texture with little purpose. Having actually built things with rivets, the placement of rivets in Warmachine is as arbitrary and nonsensical as the proliferation of skulls on GW stuff.
Except that rivets are allot less intruding in a miniature general look than a multitude of scrolls and skulls. Again, my remark was regarding miniature aesthetic appearance, I'm pushing little plastic / metal models on a table surface that supposedly represent giant robots or powerful warriors wielding lightning generating swords, I couldn't care less if the rivets are accurately placed or not.

PP has an incredible lack of understanding of how science, society, religion, and language work, focusing on a superficial semblance to these things in their setting, and a solid rules set.
Again, so does GW, and again I fail to see what this has to do with anything in my post or even this thread... If I want anything resembling actual society, religion or science I don't turn to a miniature wargame for it.

@ Phantom, re: points 1 and 2
1: I find PP minis to be equally cluttered. 2: I hate the "this premise is unrealistic, thus any demand for consistency or realism is inherently invalid" argument with a serious passion. Especially when you just said it was "practical" and "realistic", which was what I was responding to. No fair shifting the rules 'cause you don't like it
re: 3: you were the one comparing PP as better than the others. I never once said GW did it better, but that PP is no different than GW. Again, changing the scope of the argument doesn't make your old points more valid.
Breaking down the conversation:
you:"I think yellow things are better than blue ones, because yellow is brighter"
me: "I think neither yellow nor blue things are particularly good, and yellow isn't necessarily brighter"
you: "well yellow doesn't need to be bright, and why do you think blue is such hot gak?"
see how, between step 2 and 3 there's a problem?

I said it "seemed" more practical and realistic, I was discussing aesthetics, not engineering. I noticed that you failed to grasp that simple point in your initial post, there is no need to backtrack and try to cover for it.

Personally, I seem to be more of a fan of PP models compared to GW.
Sure, it may not have the choice and options as a normal Games Workshop kit, but I feel PP models generally have a nice, Minimalist feel to them, like there is only what needs to be their (granted I play Menoth, so there is a lot going on, but it not overpowering). Not really impressive unless it is painted, then the model stands out.
GW models feel a bit too cluttered, and I am kind of tired with the "LOL LETS ADD SKULLS FOR GRIMDARK!!" non-sense on the models they have, feels too damn cluttered because of it.
Then again, this is kind of subjective really. :/

I prefer PP models. They appear a bit more realistic proportions for humans in general. GW tends to have overly large heads, hands and girlie bits.
This doesn't carry to all models, but just in general.
I do like the GW plastic better and their idea of "customizable" sprues to make your squads unique. But then again, when you use 2--4+ units of marines you need to differentiate them somehow.
Though PP has alternate/updated sculpts. And they are getting into the customizing a bit. For example I believe the new Eiryss is going to have different head options, and perhaps other options as well.

I really like PP's models. Their Gargantuans and Colossals are the best 'big' models I've seen for any company, especially at the price point. The aesthetics largely remain true to their factions and notably different from other factions, which I really think is saying something given that we've got more than 9 different playable forces.
GW has completely lost me with this veer off into 'Grimdark, yet Cartoonish' that they've made in the last few years. A couple models remain excellent like the Ork MiG, but there are plenty of other Chaos metal dragon plane, Baby carrierknight, Hawk-kite-falcon-crossbow, Space Marine pod-flyers, these models are all technically very excellent but the underlying concept is just stupid and self-parodying. Skull altar land speeder of Dark Angel skulls being an especially hideous example.

Yeah, I am becoming more fond of the PP models compared to GW's as well. Main reason is that GW seems to clutter their models for the best detail and skulls almost everywhere on some models, which is a turn-off for me. PP seems to have a slightly Minimalist, but beautiful aesthetic to their models, and keep each faction unique as you said. (Although one can argue the Protectorate of Menoth and how much is going on, but with their lore it makes sense and it is not overbearing at all).

I have to say those are both very unique nicknames I have ever heard for any models.
