I never understood clamps.

The person is parked somewhere they shouldn't be, so the solution is the make the car immobile?

Write them a ticket/call a tow truck. Don't block the area with an immobile vehicle.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

You're clearly thinking of parking enforcement as some sort of public service, rather than the fiendishly morality-free revenue generating enterprise it is.

First they clamp.

They have to wait for a truck after all. It also gives them some leverage if you come back to the car. "Phone his number and pay this fee and it comes off".

It's then gets put on a lorry and sent to a pound if no payment is received - cue storage and towing fees as well.

The worst thing is this is all being done by poorly regulated private firms who are well know for extorting moent where that can. Anglegrinder Man is a welcome addition to the community.

I don't mind the local authority issuing tickets for illegal parking, the zones are always clearly marked. But private clamping firms are full of cowboys, simply because the money goes straight in their pockets. They want to clamp people and extort them for money, there are just too many cases where signage is poor and their tactics are intimidating, the legality of them 'fining' you is highly questionable which is why they clamp or tow you, to force fast payment by preventing the use of your car, and once you've paid up, which they'll argue is admitting liability, you'll never get your money back without a fight through the courts. Clamping is straight forward extortion that doesn't allow you the time or opportunity to examine your case in law.

In the case of this story, well it's hard to say. The 'robin hoods' don't have the right to abuse or intimidate people. And if they are constantly following them around, that is intimidating, after all parking wardens do get abused and attacked quite often. If you park on the yellow lines there's no reason why you shouldn't get a ticket, threatening the people issuing it is wrong, but it's common enough. So wardens do has reason to feel quickly intimidated by people following them around. On the other hand, maybe the Robin Hood people haven't behaved in this manner at all and it's been exaggerated to get them off the backs of the wardens. You. Any really say which it is, based on the article.
