It's the same cover art (unless you're genuinely counting removing the text as new cover art) and a bookmark? You're seriously claiming that as a selling point for a book that's double the price for the same content?

Drop the hostility and take a long look at my post again, dude. Let me quote myself, just one post above yours.

I'm not saying that this is worth it.

There. No, I'm not saying it's worth double the price. I didn't buy one and wouldn't. I'm not interested in Eldar.

As for the covers being the same, the art wraps around the side of the book in the LE. I have no idea what the back looks like, though. Is it much different? No, clearly not. Is it different? Yes.

Spoiler:

My point is (and I'll make it again) that the LE is not JUST a dust cover.

Same art minus words

Here's the description:
For those of you who just can't get enough of the Eldar, the limited edition Codex: Eldar is a book that you won't be able to do without. This lavish edition raises the quality of the standard Codex: Eldar which you'll notice straight away with its dust-jacket that features gloss varnish Eldar runes. Underneath the dust-jacket, the full cover art can be seen in all its glory, while on the inside there is black gilt edging and ribbon bookmarks. If you buy this limited edition you'll also receive a numbered certificate confirming that this is one of only 2,000 copies ever printed. So don't delay, be the envy of your friends and make sure you get your copy before they sell out

Here's a book I just bought:
http://store.hbo.com/inside-hbos-game-of-thrones-hardcover-book/detail.php?p=370502

192 pages, padded hardcover, full colour. $40

Here's the collectors edition
http://www.amazon.ca/Inside-HBOs-Game-Thrones-Collectors/dp/1612185738

3 separate books, a map, a wooden case, story boards and ribbon, $150

And the big difference, the Game of Thrones one will actually be worth money some day unlike GWs books that become useless after release.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I wouldn't buy one of these myself but I wouldn't ridicule those who do. It's their money, etc.

As with many "nerdy" products, there is a fancier "collector's" version available. Video games, for instance, have for years been coming out in super-special editions with trinkets such as figurines, props from the game and so forth that have no discernible practical use, so I'm unsure why a rulebook with a fancy jacket should provoke such scorn.

And it's not as if GW are being underhand. I think it's made quite clear that the actual contents of the Codex are exactly the same. If you buy it, you know exactly what you're getting. The decision rests with you. I'm normally quick to decry the "if you don't like it, don't buy it" argument but here I think it applies 100%.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Oh look, its this thread again...

To the OP, yes, you did miss something. All the complaining about the Chaos Marines, Chaos Daemons, Dark Angels, and Tau codexes coming out in a limited edition as well. They are for collectors. Its very simple.

It is quite clear that these are for collectors, but it still doesn't make it acceptable to charge such a huge amount for such a minor thing. The Game of Thrones book is an example of how you do it properly, even the 40k rulebook limited edition to a certain extent, but these codex releases simply aren't worth it in any way.

I've been playing Eldar since before the first Eldar Codex came out. (I was playing Eldar from when they first appeared in White Dwarf as a preview list)

I am single and have an income of over £50k per year,

I'm buying the collector's edition.

I don't care if you don't like it.

Fair enough, if you think it's worth it, then buy it. All I and most other people in this thread are saying is that if GW wants to sell these expensive limited edition versions, then they should add some extra value to it beyond limited supply.

When WotC made limited editions of the 3.5 books, they charge $75 for a leather-bound copy of the books and they sold. No changes, no extras. And I have never seen one in circulation, as collectors editions rarely hit gaming tables.

Simple solution: if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Just because GW aren't the only company to do it doesn't mean it is ok. I know they aren't the first to do it, and they won't be the last, all i'm saying is that I wish they would give the collectors something worth the extra price.
I am by no means criticising people who do buy these books, and I see why they do (I probably would if I had the spare income) but I would just like to see a bit more value for money in collectors edition products.

Just saw an ad for a limited release of vinyl albums that came in a box. Pretty much the box was it.

Just calm down and the world will still spin. Don't think its right? So don't buy it. Slap limited on anything and someone will buy it. It's a fact.

I certainly see what you're saying, RT. If the price were a bit lower or the "extras" a bit more, I would have gotten an Eldar LE book. I think they're an interesting army/race and have no intention of playing them, so I just picked up the normal one, though.

Even if the were a bit less expensive, the second a page gets ripped or the book is scraped along a textured board, you'll say "well, could have saved myself $20 for the cheaper one!" Collector's editions stay on bookshelves, almost 100% of the time. But, like most collectibles, if one wants one, it doesn't matter.

I read through my LE Daemon one as much as any other codex I don't actively play.

Exactly, I will go back to my previous point. For what the limited edition codexes are, I would much prefer them to have made it either a pre-order bonus or a cheaper product, perhaps £35 or £40, but doubling the price seems a tad silly. But, as SoloFalcon said, if you say it's limited, people will buy it no matter the price, and that makes GW profit and they are a business, so making profit is their job.

Well, to an extend, I believe they currently sell a few hundred LE Codexes atm to eBay sellers alone, who bet (probably sucessfully if they still continue doing it) that they can re-sell it for even more than what GW charges. Thus there is clearly still room to go up.

Will there be any other Limited Edition Codex's released because I'm pretty new to the hobby and I've just ordered a Dark Eldar Codex Should I wait because I would like a new edition if it comes out, I may not get the one with the dustcover just the £30 one. So should I cancel my order and wait or is there only going to be a Eldar one???

The Dark Eldar have a relatively new codex. It'll be a few years before they get a new one.

The Limited Edition books are just the codex with a dust cover. So consider yourself lucky you chose an army that has a regular priced codex.

How could they manage to sell 2000 of them?
Two reasons:

1) "A fool and his money are soon parted" and
2) "there's one born every minute".

They only release an LE codex with a new army release. As stated above, since DE just got a release 2 years ago, it will probably be a while (2+ years?) before they get another, so just keep your DE codex for now.

Eldar are getting one now because this is a new release for them, replacing their old codex.

I hope that helps.

And more importantly

They have thousands of employees that get 50% discount.

Honestly, the only way I'd pay double for a LE Codex is if it was bundled with a limited edition mini sculpt. Like an alt. Eldrad or something with the same rules, just neater pose.

But for a dust jacket?.....
