GW did this at my first GT, Baltimore 2001. You had a 1250 core list with two 500pt sideboards. The whole 2250 army had to be legal within one Force Org, as did either 1750 configuration. The whole 2250 was judged for painting and composition.

Each game you exchanged core lists and picked a 1750. In game 4 the other 500pt force was part of the game, and started in Reserve. In game 6 the non-selected 500pts again did not start on the table; instead, starting on turn 2 each turn you could either bring a unit from that detachment in, or bring in a completely-destroyed unit that had already been on the table.

Funny, was just thinking about this today after revisiting 40k for the new Eldar release.

Having dipped into the Warmahordes tournament scene for a SR2012 and SR2013 now, I'm confused why 40k tournaments haven't caught up to this, especially given the development of allies in 6th.

-Core list containing 2/3 to 3/4 of the army. Two self contained sideboards each bringing it up to full points.
-Blind pick sideboard after viewing opponent's core list and sideboard options, with a simultaneous reveal. Takes a minute tops.
-Sideboards aren't compulsory and you can just field a single full point list, which removes any barrier to entry argument.

I think it's a great idea. I might even steal it.
