I prefer to field all the units I like, so much so I end up playing MSU to get all them in lists too small to keep them.

This. For some reason I naturally feild army lists like this, partly because I find the clunky nature of having several 30+ model units un-appealing and partly for the reason previously mentioned.

In the past my method for picking what models to use was fairly simple... As little multi-part metal models as humanly possible! Thankfully thats pretty much a non-issue now. But the lack of plastic models did force me to consider conversions with other plastic kits (eg, Shadow Warriors from WE Glade Guard) which I'm actually kind of thankful for now because my army has a certain unique-ness to it.

I pick my units most of the time to match my tac style. Sometimes I try something different and field an army just for s&g's and its usually fun like an all foot list with no special weapons except a couple flamers and a couple devistator squads. I usually play vanilla marines.

I have a mixture i guess, but i play WoC so its hard to find a unit in there that doesnt look cool and is good in some aspect.

Sadly this mindset doesnt work well in 40k, but luckily is most of the good Tau units good looking too...

it really does depend on the situation.

for me its a mixed basket.

I look at the book, I look at whats powerful and whats not, I'll look at the models, decide on a theam, select my army based on the theam.

for tournaments however I would just convert those that I do not like.

as an example I do not like the warshrine model, as such I have converted a steamtank to be my warshrine, it looks pretty cool tbh.

I have plans on adapting a 40k mauler fiend and combining it with a hell canon kit for my second hell canon as I'm not really a fan of the hell canon model as a whole...its just not monstery enough to be a monster in my mind, looks too much like a canon!
