For forgeworld turrets find its a huge hit. But for standard railheads/Ionheads from5th to 6th i really dont see how it has made a huge difference. Any real close up threats to my tanks such as melta a 12 inch movement isnt going to help. My hammerheads are usually burried deep in my back lines with an entire view of the battlefield. Any threat that getts close enough such as melta to be a threat will still be a threat after my 12" movement, and with the vast amount of support my HH's are usually surrounded by i dont really see how its a huge loss. Sure its a mini nurf but not the end of the world nurf some posts are making it out to be. So far it hasnt affected my game plan at all.
Being able to move 12" and still shoot main gun was very important because you usually needed full movement to have a chance to move away from enemy assault range, or open the angle for side armour shot. Also, 12" is pretty much minimum to have any ability to move over terrain pieces. Being able to move just 6" and fire everything was equally important in focus fire tactics, where you concentrated every gun to deal with troublesome enemy unit. In 6th edition where you need to move to gain Jink save it is even more important.
Sure, if you only used tanks to sit still and shoot, then it was not important. But why then you'd use Hammerheads at all since Broadside was so much better in that? Or even play Tau in the first place - Space Marines are much better for that sort of tactics.

But if your placement is good you should have some markers and alot of other support around to utilise Supporting Fire for any assault. I always try to place my Tau to take atvantage of Supporting Fire and with the HH being the size it is, it's quite easy to get a large amount of squads at least partialy within 6". Before in 5th yes it was important, but if somthing can make it past your back lines without getting shot up on the way there or shot up via interceptor and finally make it to your back field HH, something went wrong.

Thank you very much Peregrine!
I spent all my money on fire prisms and elder jetbikes to buy the reissue taros book but was really looking forward to seeing what upgrades were had. Would you mind if I took some of these ideas and put them into my ongoing tactical thread?

Am I the only one who things the gunboat LBBC hammerhead would be funny in overwatch when paired with an SMS?
MOAR DAKKA XD
Seriously though, what am I missing about the drone turrets?
They just seem to be wrongly priced, i mean, why take an immobile BS2 drone when a mobile BS3 suit costs the same?
there ARE uses for a wall of AV11, I know. but its packs so little punch its embarrassing.
Unless ofcourse, there is something I am missing there.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now. |

It appears to me the drone sentry turrets biggest strength is they are AV11 rather than T4 (Immune to weapons weaker than s5), and that they do not compete for elite slots that carry the same or similar weaponry. Those "strengths" do not make them 100% efficient choices, but i can see where the game developers were coming from on that one slightly. Plus they look cool as hell, and let's face it -- that should be the most important part of the game.

I picked up a single drone turret. I plan to use it as a Tau-themed Aegis gun, with magnetized missile pods for autocannons, or railguns (leftover from missilesides) as an Icarus.

They're troops. So when you've filled your elites up by taking a couple Riptides and a suicide melta suit you can still throw some fairly efficient missile pods on the table.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

So I received my IA3 book yesterday and had a idea for a new use for my HQ.
Commander XV-84 2x mpods ewo, Veltrac, 2x marker drones
Sniper team, 3x Marksmen, 3x Sniperdrones.
The unit effectively puts out 6 BS5 markerlights, while providing some effective anti-air. And in a pinch can put some soild wounds on a MC like an opposing riptide or wraithknight. With 3+ saves on the commander and stealth added to the unit, I think overall this can be a very effective unit. Most likely using the Sniper drones as wound for the rest of the unit. it does come in a quite a few point combine, but having 5-6 markerlights and effective anti-air if pretty solid setup.
This unit is going to be paired up with a 2nd HQ, a standard immotal'o in a Broadside squad.
On the same note, intereceptor effectively let me shoot any number of weapons I have based on the wording in the rule book. So I could shoot my networked markerlight followed by both mpods? correct?

It starts with 0 seekers, may buy up to 4.
It has auto-targeting burst cannons (18" Range, s5 ap5, ignores jink)
Points cost is the same as it was in Aeronautica.
I'm sorry, i'm looking at the Aeronautica codex... does FW use some sort of weird points system or is a barracuda really the same amount of points as a Crisis suit. 30 Pts/model?
