I and my friend personally love to have miniatures, and we live in a college town. Perhaps not the best related hobbies during college time, but it sure is fun. Anyways, we are going to start a school club and actually have a large interest pool of 20-30 people right now. I and my friend are going to be the club heads, and I am just wondering if anyone can help understand what I am getting into.
I know it will be time consuming to file all the paper work, and further more all the planning and rallying and I am prepared for that. What I am not prepared for is to manage 20-30 headless chickens running around. It looks like the games the club will be playing is Warhammer
40k, Infinity, and Robotech. I also want the club to encompass painting, and modeling and general trash crafting for terrain on the cheap side.
Too long didn't read? I am starting a miniatures guild/club want advice/stories.
General Advice Questions:
Where can I get stuff for free/affordable to start a club?
How do manage paints, terrains and people to make sure nothing goes missing? (I fear to have demo armies because of this)
I need demo armies suggestions on getting those? - just the models I can paint them.
I will take experience/stories or anything you got just so I can go in knowing what is going to happen.
Robotech.... This is a bit of a double edged sword. On the one hand it is simple and easy to learn and play. On the other it is very little above action man with its Gakky out of scale human sculpts and its GI joe style flyers and light tracked/wheeled vehicles not to mention its real firing wissile pods. You want to be careful with it. I would advise keeping the Mechs but throwing out almost everything else baring the missile pods. Then build up detailed cockpits on the Mechs, get pilot figures-
GW Sentinel pilots are a good choice and can be bought from bits sites. The tracked/wheeled vehicles should be heavily modified to look more serious and less kiddys toy like. This is actually quite easy. and just requires a large bits ox and some imagination. The Flyers however are a larger problem-these will need either an almost complete rebuild or try converting other models. For the infantry use plastic infantry models from other sources-try
IG and/or
SM (its what i use) or there is a plentiful supply of
40K scale kits out there.
However the game is heap and you should enjoy it. Also the terrain they produce for it is quite cheap and can be used for many game systems. It is also modular in assembly and requires no glue so it can be modified easily for many variations.
As for terrain? Well a stripped out dvd player makes a great building, with the insides built out of whatever you have lying around.
