A pity. I'd like to see a Japanese A-Team, perhaps with Norio Wakamoto in place of Mr T. Seeing as he's the Japanese equivalent of Chuck Norris and BRIAN BLESSED after all.

This story inspires me. I am going to sue CNN for using Spanish words and phases too often.. The encroachment of Spanish/Mexican culture is too much and is corrupting our society. I want 3 million USD

Traditionalists in France and French-speaking Canada also worry about the influx of English words into their native tongue.

They really ought to fix that... should really say people in Montreal and Quebec

And they really shouldn't complain, English is quite obviously a superior language to French

I can't but laugh as the thread makes me remember the times I went out on dates in Germany where the female was talking like she was hosting a MTV event.

Most foreigners living in Japan give a pretty good rant about their hosts if you let them. Usually the atom-thin line of racism gets crossed even by those who can choose their words carefully. Western women are pretty ぶさく, but that is totally subjective. Even the cast-off girls here are better looking than most of the girls back home. Cosplay is Japan's answer to LARPing and they actually resemble the anime characters they are trying to represent...usually. But, like the BS "hurr hurr hurr those crazy Japanese" stories about Japan that get pushed in North America (wasn't there one about eye-ball licking on the forum a week or two ago?....Isn't this thread about one?), when they show Western anime cosplay here, there are a lot of 300 lb plus Narutos, everyone has a good laugh, takes off their shoes, sits on the floor, and eats raw-fish with sticks.

We'll never see a universal language until decades after the US accepts the Metric system, i.e. never.

I would ask what is so bad about learning more than one language? Globally, monolinguals are in the minority.

We have far more threads about strange and odd western behavior, but if you mean that both cultures mock what they really don't understand, or are only exposed to a thin slice of, I agree.

Spending time mastering one language that everyone speaks seems vastly more efficient than spending however long it would take learning the 7000ish (according to what im seeing on google) different languages spoken in the world today.

It's not just about efficiency though, and you don't have to learn anywhere near 7,000 languages to be able to communicate with an extremely large number of people. In addition, convincing the people of the world to give up their native language and culture in the name of efficiency isn't going to happen any time soon; the language that everybody speaks doesn't exist. Plus, there are a lot of advantages to knowing more than one language, including cognitive and mental health benefits.

It is a western forum. We have more threads about all sorts of western behaviour. Most of us know nothing about most Japanese behaviour, and we focus on the "wacky Japan" stories that are presented in the media.

A few years back when I was in highschool I had a teacher who mentioned that this was a growing issue worldwide, not just in Japan. Something about how there are fewer spoken languages worldwide and how there will be fewer in the future. I could honestly care less about fewer languages, so long as a diverse vocabulary is maintained.

I will...never be a memory

This really is giving my a sense of deja vu about that cosplay guy. At least we all get to enjoy some schadenfreude when the guy fails.

Oh well, it's not like we can fault the guys entrepreneurial spirit.

Anyhows, I'm off to eat some tapas then watch the Pacific Rim trailer. It's apparently about a bunch of mecha fighting some kaiju.
