Never really seen the appeal of Ice Hockey.

High speed sport, played in a confined box where the players get to carry long bludgeoning impliments while wearing the equivalent of modern full-plate armour and a pair of lethally sharp stainless steel blades on their feet...
Where the objective is to hammer a small round piece of solid rubber as hard as you can through the opposing goalkeeper and physical assault is completely legal!

Fairly sure a crowd could do it without the help of any implement. It's just less messy for you when you let the horses do the trick.

Reading about this, I thought there'd be scope to talk about how shockingly violent life can be in places like Sao Paulo, and how sometimes that casual violence can lead to stuff as horrific as quartering a guy and putting his head on a stake.

Instead it seems like Dakka decided it wanted to have a boring ass 'the sport I got raised on is good while the sport you got raised on is boring' pissing contest. Whatever.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

A friend of mine died playing rugby.

Sometimes ( especcially when you think about these things a lot) its better to bicker and put some light into a situation instead of ruminating on how terrible and brutal the real world is. Thats me though so YMMV.

Yeah, that makes sense. But do we have to bicker about something as inane as 'the sport I was raised on is objectively better than the sport you were raised on'?

At least it is an argument that can sway people to say 'well I guess that sport sounds pretty fun' or something along those lines. If we go with a more 'serious' argument that always crops up on here, like guns, it always ends in the same way (insults, no one ever really accepting the merit of the other sides' arguments), and for all the value that it holds as a discussion is just as inane as an argument about which sport is better.

Yeah, was actually wondering if this would end up on OT boards, and sure enough. It looked like a really amateur game, the article I read unfortunately had pictures, and he appeared to be wearing a t shirt and jean shorts, so pretty casual setting i think.

Super disgusting stuff.... People acting like savages.

It's a good thing we have you to guide us back on topic to discuss such a weighty topic instead of just complaining about the direction the thread went

True, it didn't end up yet another gun thread, so it's got that going for it.

Actually, it's something of Christmas in July miracle that someone didn't come in and claim if only that ref had a gun he never would have been killed.

Hey! Complaining about dakka being boring is way more interesting!

What? What films did Hans Zimmer recycle Gladiator music for?

Really? Pirates of the Caribbean. It was so jarring when I first saw Pirates of the Caribbean (I would shorten it to Pirates, but there could be a misunderstanding), because it is essentially the same piece. This youtube thing touches on it, I don't care who the song is credited to on IMDB the similarities are such that I can't see anyone but Hans doing it, because if someone else did he'd have to notice them stealing his stuff.

I imagine Hans Zimmer as the guy who goes to parties all the time and then realises, on the last day before it needs to be in, all the work he was supposed to be doing isn't done. So he just goes 'You know what was good? The music from Gladiator.' Then gets that and changes it slightly.
He has now realised he can get away with this.
All Hans Zimmer does is party and edit Gladiator music.
