Once you are able and if there's a chance, add a female Sniper named "Jeska". I always play my MMOs and RPGs with a female char and Jeska is the name I always try to use

Started playing XCOM aswell, and my "Specter" (Sniper) is my favorite trooper. That girl hits floaters on overwatch a mile away

In a previous game I had a terrifying ditch sniper lady who went by the nickname 'Nightmare'

You certainly can. Although most of my soldiers have names like "[whatever name they started off with] FR" or "[] BA" (front of the boat, back of the boat) with a few other 2 letter abbreviations for other positions.

Doing a blind Youtube series on it right now (well not right now since I'm in China and they don't let me get at Youtube). Things are going surprisingly well, I'm at the end of the second month and have consistently killed more aliens than I've lost soldiers (not soldiers, soldiers are too expensive. We got a shipment of pastry chefs, insane asylum residents, and street musicians).

First base defense went over pretty well. Lost about a third of my soldiers as the entirety of the floater homeworld directed itself into my base...but I survived, only to have a terror mission hit me about 24 hours afterwords (if it would have waited another day or two I could have armed everyone with heavy plasmas...they know!).

Anyway, if you need another soldier feel free to call up Joe Momma (that's another one of my internet names). Preference to support, but assault works too, or whatever else you need.

Shrike moves up and takes cover behind a pick-up truck. Otto moves up and takes cover behind some rocks
Mcpants sprints to cover behind a tree while Dave and Ed take cover next to shrike

The aliens respond by being creepy.

Mcpants runs behind a different tree. Dave moves up to another tree while Shrike and Ed run behind separate rocks. Otto moves up to yet another tree.

The aliens respond with more creepy noises.

Shrike moves into cover behind some rocks while Otto moves up next to Ed. Ed runs forward to take cover behind a tree while Dave and Mcpants do the same with other trees.

Shrike sprints across and finds himself next to the UFO and spots the UFO and the outsider who is inside. Otto moves up and Mcpants does the same while Ed tries to shoot it but misses. Dave moves closer to get a better shot.

The outsider shoots at Ed nearly killing him

Otto opens fire but misses. While Dave takes aim and nails the outsider with a headshot. Mcpants moves closer to the UFO. Shrike heals Ed who moved into cover next to him.

Floaters appear!

Mcpants activates beastmode and kills one of the floaters. Dave moves towards the UFO while Shrike moves to the floater and nearly kills it.

The floater gets into cover and opens fire on Ed who is again nearly killed. Ed returns fire but misses. Shrike heals him (again) while Dave, Otto and Mcpants move into cover so they can open fire on it next turn.

The floater attempts to flee and in the process opens himself up to fire from both Otto and Mcpants. He does not survive.

Hearing movement inside the squad rush into the UFO, taking cover behind various things. Two sectoids come into view. Shrike, who is on overwatch, fires but misses.

Otto attempts to tell one of his infamous jokes but it misses and destroys a tree. Ed attempts to shoot a sectoid but fails miserably. Shrike moves up and nails a sectoid. Dave targets a sectoid but misses. Mcpants, having seen his comrades inaccuracy, activates beastmode and rushes across the ufo leaps the cover the alien is hiding behind and shoots him in the face.

Ed killed nothing and is promoted to squaddie. Also wounded.
Shrike got 1 kill and is promoted to lieutenant.
Otto got no kills and is still alive.
Mcpants got 3 kills and a promotion to lieutenant.
Dave got 1 kill and a promotion to corporal.

Oh yeah, I now have laser weapons so i'm gonna be outfitting you guys with them ASAP.

Purplefood, if it helps remember lightning reflexes.

The first auto-miss is crucial. Use it. At first I used lightning reflexes to help protect my assaults, then I learned to play decoy rabbit with them. Expose them deliberately to fire to draw the sting of aliens on overwatch, complete their turn and then kill the alien who has had his shot with the assault or a further unactivated squad mate.

Yeah that has helped so much...
Fairly sure Mcpants 'Loco' is only alive because of it...

The squad deploys from the dropship.
Shrike ducks behind a car while otto moves up and spots a pair of thinmen. The thinmen scatter and shrike (On overwatch) nails one of them. Revenge moves up past otto and spots another pair of thinmen as well as a pair of sectoids on the roof. Revenge is totally out of cover relative to their position.

The aliens unleash hell on revenge killing him. He takes a poison shot from one thinman, a plasma shot from a sectoid and two more plasma shots from the other thinmen leaving him a smouldering corpse.

Shrike moves up and nails the thinman who poisoned revenge. Otto moves up and shoots at the sectoid who fired at revenge but misses so dave puts a bullet in his head instead. Loco moves up near the station itself.

The sectoid legs it off the roof and the other two sectoids shoot at otto and mess up.

Shrike moves next to loco and fires at the thinman killing it. Loco moves up and otto, very conscious of Dr Vahlen's orders somehow restrains himself from blowing up both the last sectoid and thinman and hunkers down instead. Dave moves up next to otto and the petrol pump infront of them explodes through otto's struggle to restrain his nature... or the plasma fire...

Loco very nearly dies when the sectoid flanks him and opens fire.

Loco is healed by shrike and then runs towards the sectoid and stuns him with his manliness/arc thrower. Otto flanks the remaining thinman and dave does the same.

The last thinman fires at shrike and hits him causing minor damage.

The rest of the team shuffle around, keeping their distance from the thinman while loco decides to buck the trend and charge the thinman in order to use his manliness/arc thrower on him.

The thinman runs off stopping loco from deploying the arc thrower and then he poisons dave.

The team reshuffle and loco makes it this time but takes a plasma burst to the chest for his troubles. In retaliation he tases the thinman in the balls and kicks him.

The eggheads are happy but the operatives have lost Revenge who is smoking slightly in the forecourt of the petrol station...

All aliens dead: Yay!
1 dead human... and so it begins.

Otto is the only unwounded operative.
Shrike killed 3 thinmen.
Loco killed no one but stunned a sectoid and a thinman advancing SCIENCE forever!
Revenge died.
Dave scored 1 kill.

Also Carapace armour and laser guns!

Still invincibul!

Only Liquid Nitrogen can defeat me!

Yeah you've been hurting things...

The squad deploys and Dave immediately rescues a civilian. The rest of the squad moves into cover with Mcpants and Money taking cover behind the same truck. Just Dave rescues another civilian and moves into the store and spots a pair of floaters. Money runs to begin climbing up a drain pipe but spots a pair of chrysalids and a pair of floaters on the roof... The rest of the squad charge into the store to take cover from rooftop shots.

One of the chrysalids attempts to run past Ed (On overwatch) who opens up with his heavy laser and wounds it. A civilian is killed and the two floaters move to the edge of the roof to fire on our boys. Jeska almost gets nailed by a floater but ducks in time.

Ed blasts one of the roof floaters apart while Jeska crosses her fingers and fires at the chrysalid killing it. Dave takes the head off of the floater who fired on Jeska while Money and Mcpants save some more civilians.

A floater flanks Mcpants but it blown apart by Money's shotgun. Mcpants immediately saves another civilian. Jeska moves up to cover the stairs of the store and sends another civilian towards the waiting shuttle. Dave takes a position opposite Mcpants. Ed takes up position behind Jeska ready to lend fire support.

A chrysalid storms out of nowhere past mcpants and dave and leaps onto the second floor of the shop. A floater jumps down but does nothing else.

Dave runs past the floater to secure a civilian while Ed fires at it but misses. Mcpants rushes it and blasts it in the face with his shotgun while Money secures a civilian. Jeska goes into overwatch overlooking the stairs.

A chrysalid jumps off of the roof and scuttles towards Money.

Money reacts by running away and shooting at it with his shotgun, missing, but wiping out most of the storefront. Mcpants tries a similarly long range shot but also misses. Jeska runs forward and blasts the alien and wounds it... a bit.

The chrysalid jumps back onto the roof and kills a civilian...

The squad runs about in various directions trying to find the chrysalids but not wanting to get caught out by the lethal buggers. Jeska and Dave run up the stairs to the roof.

One of the chrysalids jumps off the roof again and mcpants tries a reaction shot but misses.

Ed reloads while Money blasts the chrysalid who is now so close to him he can count the hairs on it's chin. Mcpants finishes it off with a blast from his scatter laser. Jeska can smell the blood of the chrysalid she wounded and tries to fire on it but misses. Dave goes into overwatch so he can watch Jeska's back.

The chrysalid butchers another civilian. The zombie falls off of the roof...

Dave pulls his pistol out and kicks the door open before blasting the chrysalid with his gun. It lives but it is now badly wounded. Ed blasts the zomble with his cannon but misses. Money and mcpants move up to the counter of the store but only money has enough ammo to go into overwatch. Mcpants reloads instead, 'cos he's cool like that. Jeska decides her commander is a gak-head for not giving her grenades, grits her teeth and blasts the remaining chrysalid with her assault rifle killing it.

A zomble rises from the dead, the skydiving zomble attempts to molest mcpants and receives a blast from money's shotgun for its trouble. The other zomble walks up to dave but doesn't attack.

Dave, a veteran of many zombie films, presses the barrel of his gun to the zomble's head and pulls the trigger killing it instantly. The other zomble is cut to pieces by ed's heavy weapon.

Purple I so wish I can fax you some of my "RL" AAR's to help you really add some spice into your Battle Reports. Though I am glad I didn't brought this version of Xcom being I really like to run three "fire teams"

If you had a fire team of two you could have 3 of them...
Bit of a problem otherwise though...

I usually run my fireteams in 3s when I can. I've got a sniper sitting back and taking things out when he can (which he does well). I've got a Heavy guy, a shotgun badass, and a medic. They've racked up a good 75 kills between the three of them (the shotgun badass has 35 herself). Though recently I've been supporting them with an Assault character and another Sniper, so it's been 2 snipers and a fire team of 4... I get the job done...

I usually end up with a 4 and a 2. Though the 4 is spread out enough to assist the 2 if they have to...
Mostly the 2 is a heavy and an assault though it does change...

Heavy it is, she certainly did her share of murdering!

She very nearly died at one point. The chrysalid that she blew to pieces was a turn away from having her for lunch/zomble minion...

I tend to run two assault, two support, one heavy and a sniper.
Though I am tempted to ditch the heavy and run a second sniper, seeing as I rarely use the RPG and so the accuracy is more useful...
