Painting has begun. I don't really like painting as much as sculpting so progress has slowed to a degree.
Anways, here's where I'm at:

Bone parts and metallic parts are done aside from the bone handle which I somehow missed completely I'll have to make a few touch-ups here and there but that will come later.
It is only now that I fully realise how difficult it's going to be to paint certain parts of this model, such as the inside of the cloak and the underside of his arms. Granted these are areas that are not usually closely inspected I still like to get a bit of paint down in those areas if just to please critical eyes

Celtic Warrior wrote:Am I right in thinking the armour will be black with flames? If so would a black cloak and tabard thingie be too much , don't know if your paint skills are up there but ghosted blue/ grey flames and skulls on the cloth would IMO look badass.

Well I was considering painting the cloth and ropes a dark red and then paint flames coming up from the bottom of the cloth. My concern with this approach is that the fire will not stand out well against the red background.
While I have seen blue flames done on LotD before and it did look quite good it's not quite the look I'm going for. My freehand skill isn't amazing but I think I will look up some cloth tutorials and freehand flame tutorials.

The_Slight_Brigade wrote:@Xendarc - I'm glad I could help. While I like spooky more, I can see how a 1.3" model might not be the best showcase for "ooh so scary!"

painting scheme brainstorm: one thing you could try is bone details painted on the armor and flame designs on the hem of the cape. The Centurius pic about 75% of the way down this page has bones on his thighs, putting stuff like that on his shins and arms might break up the black a little:
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Legion_of_the_Damned

Yeah the flames on the hem of the cape is the look I'm goin' for
On several other of my LotD models I have actually sculpted bone onto parts of the armour, much like with the captain's ribcage.

Anyway, I would like to hear what you all think would be the best way to go about painting the cloak and tabard.
C&C welcomed and appreciated.

Cheers

So this is my first major attempt at painting cloth.
How did I do?

I'm thinking it could go for another wash to make it a bit darker and then maybe some additional highlighting.

Also, excuse the shiny patches. The wash is still wet in places

Very impressive, you're really doing the model justice.

That's pretty great for first time cloth.

my only thing is red cloth on red ropes kinda adds little variance. though in a LotD what colors could you possible use

Thanks a lot Yours and comments like this really help me feel better about my work and motivate me to keep going!

Ikr... I think I might hit the cloth parts with a wash of Agrax Earthshade to really bring it closer to the musty/dirty look I'm going for. Hopefully the ropes will look good in contrast to the darker cloth if I leave them as they are.
Before I do this though I'm going to test it on a piece of sprue as I do not wish to ruin what I've got going on already.

Anyone, please let me know if you think the Earthshade wash is a bad idea. I'd hate to go through with it if there is a better alternative.

Cheers

Well it's been some time but I've stirred from my skeletal slumber and got some painting down.

Unfortunately I've not finished painting him yet. I am still to paint flames on his front cloth and various spaces on his armour.
The cloth is the part I'm avoiding as it with be difficult to manoeuvre the brush in behind his weapons. Alas this is a problem I've created for myself due to my lack of insight

My lack of focus has been in part due to receiving the Dark Angels half of a DV box my friend and I split
In relation to that, who can guess what I'm working on next for my LotD?

Awesome stuff Xendarc. At first glance I thought that bike tire was a hollowed out Oreo!

Out of interest, what paints/shades of red did you use to paint the cloak?

Well since this guy has been shelved for now and I've not made a current progress update for him...

HRRRRRGGGGGGGUUGGGGUUuuuuhhh..

As you can see he's pretty darn close to completion, upon which I'll be posting further pics
So don't worry, this isn't the last you'll see of this guy

Thanks for the comment. I'm pretty happy with the cloth colour and would be happy for you to use a similar scheme.
The recipe is just below if that helps at all.

Errm... Well I can't tell you exactly what I did unfortunately as I've since forgotten (It was largely experimental) but I can give you a rough run-down.
1. Abb Black base
2. Mephiston Red layer
3. Carroburg Crimson wash
4. Mephiston Red drybrush and highlight
5. Evil Sunz Scarlet highlight

6. repeat step 3 - 5

7. Agrax Earthshade wash
8. Agrax Earthshade mixed with a very small amount of Runelord Brass

I'm sure there's a simpler way of achieving the look I got to but there's my recipe.

At first I read your comment as "Awesome, just doesn't do this mini justice" and thought you were telling me that while awesome, the conversion didn't do the original model justice.
Don't worry though I get what you're saying and I appreciate the compliment
