SM are the posterchild of
40k, everyone knows them and vast majority of people that dont research the other races will pick them up.
Orks are the posterchild's main enemy, and will be picked up for either the same reason as the
SM or because the more artistic players just want to convert like no tomorrow and Orks allow that to an insane degree (Hell, Landraiders have specs you must follow that offer next to no modifications...Battlewagons dont even state how their weapons are mounted except the Killkannon and the exact specs are only known as "Big monsters")
SM are probably ahead of Orks purely because they are the posterchild. I think orks need it more because the heart and soul of the ork codex (assault) is virtually impossible except in 2 lists, and that gets boring.
