Any Elder Scrolls past Daggerfall. The one word I would use to describe them would be somniferous; I just couldn't get into them.

Why the hate for Bioshock? The game, the book ... everything about it is fabulous. Immersive as hell and creepy to boot. I might be biased as my wife's something of an Ayn Rand disciple though ...

The first Bioshock was pretty good. The second was pretty meh. The third is just pretty.

Dragon Age 2 , highly disappointing effort.

GTA4 just ugggh.

Any WoW expansion past TBC.

Colonial Marines was a bit of a trainwreck.

True. I don't have the patience to beat most games, so any game with 20+ factions and a bunch of victory conditions can't be overrated for someone with videogame ADD.

My SO, who is soon going to have 2 degrees in American Religious History, says that Bioshock Infinite is her favorite game and easily one of the best mass market works pertaining to early 20th century religious thought ever.

So I think it depends a lot what you thought of the story and the attention to detail thereof.

1. FFVII: It's not overrated in the same way as the others. It's just that it has aged QUITE badly and people haven't noticed yet. I would not say that it was overrated upon release. It was incredible back then. People overrate it as standing up to today's standards, which it does not.

2. GTAIV: Very high reviews, lack of coherency between narrative and gameplay, uninteresting story that works against the fun mechanics. Not as much bad as.. off somehow. The fun pieces that made the other GTAs are all there, but somehow it's just not fun this time.

3. Devil May Cry series: Competently made, good character design and such. None of them are anywhere near as mindblowing as you will hear them described.

4. Fable 3: This one isn't "overrated" as much as overhyped. I think by now everyone knows it wasn't actually very good, but there was a time when it was expected to change everything. lol whoops.

5. Halo 2: Same as above. When it first came out everyone just FREAKED out, but then after the dust settled, we realized it wasn't really that great compared to 1 and later to the superb 3.

I think a lot of people picked it up recently or look at more recent FF games and judge it based on that. So agreed. FF7 when it came out was awesome. I spent so much time on that game.

I played the crap out of 3 and San Andreas. Played IV and couldn't get into it.

I thought FFVII was overrated when it came out, and still do.

It was my first console game, as bizarrely I got a snes after I got a ps1, so FF7 always will have a special place for me.

I am amused at someone going "Wow look at haters" for posting their lists and then when someone points out something on their list it's "oh I don't hate it, I just found it overrated".

Replying FF7 in the present, after games like mass effect, I found myself frequently wondering how I ever tolerated a game jerking me around that much.

The older JRPGs are extremely hostile toward the player, frequently hiding important information for the sake of "challenge". You notice it more now that we've gotten away from that.
