I first got into 40k when Rogue Trader came out, but I actually really didnt play it until I had already gotten into Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine. Compared to that game (which was kind of a mess tracking all of the rules in White Dwarf), RT was an even bigger mess. The books like Freebooters and the chaos ones were really awesome to read, but in actuality really difficult to play in my opinion. It was like GW was saying, hey, we have this great idea, and bare with us as well throw out our ideas for it pieces at a time. It was such a mess I had to get out of it I just didnt enjoy the game even though I loved the setting.
Then one summer I find 2nd Edition has hit the stores, and I think it was $54 at the time. I got it from my sister for my birthday and I was so excited. There was so much in the box, and with the (starter) codex, me and my friends had plenty to chew on as more was released for it over the years. And it was streamlined and I didnt have to go back to missing white dwarf articles for rule updates. Everything I needed was in that box set.
By today's standards, a lot of it is cheesy, but its the only edition I think that screams fun more than the others. Our gaming group had found a lot of issues with the rules, so we kept a notebook we called the Rule Bible, that whenever we worked something out, it went into that book. To be honest despite our heated debates at times, we still managed to have fun. I wonder how others handled them.
That being said, I played more games with 2nd edition than I have any other, and bought a MIB set along with a MIB Dark Millenium some years ago to make up for ditching my original set when I thought I was all done with the hobby. Even though the components have gotten better in the starter sets over the years, to be honest I wasnt so happy with a set as I was with 2nd edition until 6th edition came out. The Dark Vengeance models are simply awesome.
But I am way past collecting huge armies and playing big games as GW encourages. I am happy playing skirmish games with super heros, and skirmish games with the average joes. Its just it seems like you are able to do so much more with so little in 2nd edition than you are in later editions. It isnt perfect, but its fun. And I appreciate that.
I will never give up my copy. And after all these editions all I have is 2nd and 6th.
