Lord of the Rings Online is a bit like WoW. It's free all the way to the end-game, but there is some content locked as part of pay-for expansions. Micro-transactions let you pick the bits you want, though.
Even though after I left WoW some time back, LOTRO seemed to have a lot more to it.
Grinding gets you stat boosts and reputation points for special store options.
Crafting can make you money, just be stopping at times to loot a node.
Later levels let you build up your special items, as every class has two types of. Mount saddles can be levelled up, too.
The epic story-line takes you through every part of the world. Most of it can be done solo, but some quests are group-only.
