If I got a soda cap calling me that, I'd be delighted. I'd stick it up over my painting station as inspiration.

Good, ungood, doubleplus ungood and all the rest were replacing a wide variety of terms. The idea was to make people less capable of expressing complex ideas by denying them complex and subtle language with which to communicate that language.

In this case retardation is being replaced by a wide variety of terms to describe the various conditions we use to describe with the blanket description 'mental retardation'. So it's basically the opposite of 1984.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

It was just the quote "it's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words" I always think of whenever one of my more pc friends tell me there is a word "I'm not allowed" or "can no longer" use right before I go ahead and use the words anyway.

In the case of r****d, it simply means too many things to too many languages/contexts try and meaningfully sensor its use. You can use something like intellectual disability for mental health, here in Canada mental retardation is still more commonly used. My buddy said when he was still in med school (2011) the term was still in use, he himself still uses the term but he has no prefference. Obviously if you have a specific diagnosis you'll say that. Something like autism though you won't know until like 6months after birth or later.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Imagine having a bad day, some friends screwed you over, you buckled bad on an important task you were entrusted with, you're tired and all pissed off - then you open up a bottle of Coca Cola and it calls you a r*tard.

Hilarious.

The book is great. It expands on ideas like the destruction of words in far more complete ways.

True. I mean really it's just instance of terminology treadmill, as mentally slowed originally came in as a nicer way to describe people who what had previously been referred to as imbeciles and things like that. In time slowed spread in to the wider community, and became a term of abuse in its own right, at which point new words came to be used. And even now, terms like special have begun to be used as perjoratives.

So you know, it is all kind of a bit silly. But the alternative is to use slowed or similar terms to describe people who take offense at those terms, and that's not cool.

So, has IRN BRU picked up on this idea yet? They'd do it intentionally.
