It is not my intention to hold back anyone. In my experience it's better to concentrate and take small steps at the time, especially, if you do not have a mentor. Reading through the start and the end of this topic you can see certain details were made clear and now we know how to respond in certain situation. The problem I have with allure of link teams and special toys is that they might give the incorrect impression of the game. You do not need link teams or special visors to take out camouflaged model, a riffle catching someone in the open is just as deadly and most of the times far cheaper. I had a player expressing frustration how Aleph relies and "needs" special toys, which I consider to be a false claim. There is also "big toys" syndrome when two players bring link teams and just smash both link teams together. I'm sure people playing with Haramaki, Magister and Riot Grrls will understand my point.

By all means take a link team if you feel comfortable playing with more advanced rules.

I definitely recommend not touching Link teams until you are comfortable with the base rules. It's a complex game, and Link teams are another layer of complexity (seriously, they are a very long segment of rules).

Spend your first dozen or so games playing vanilla lists or sectorial lists with no Link teams, and escalate how many special toys you bring. Start with a few Line Infantry with Rifles and a special weapon. When you are comfortable with the Order and ARO system, move to 150pt games with a few special models. After a few games, escalate to 200pts, then 300pts. After a few full games at 300pts, escalate to the bigger toys like Link teams and TAGs.

This isn't a game like 40k where you can go out, buy a 1500pt army and comfortably learn with it. The rules are layers upon layers, so it's best to ease into the game system.
