There's always problems with online stuff in the first week. Sometimes it's really bad and other times it isn't...

Nothing odd about that. Their cloud servers where the character should get saved on aren't working. You can make characters all you want but they'll get deleted as soon as you log off.

This wasn't the first time, when I finished making my character and entered, the whole "Cannot connect to host" thing happened and logged off, and found my character gone.

However, last night when I tried it again, I got in and my character is there.

I'm pretty sure you're maybe just like "Logged off" of the server and when they fix that you may probably get your character back just like what happened to my first one last night.

Your character might be there, but the Rockstar Character Save server is offline. Thus you'll be unable to use it.
That server is a bit overstressed at the amount of people trying to acces it.

I read the char deletion thing is temporary, someone said rockstar said your chars should appear sooner or later.

I think they stated a few hours ago that tomorrow they will release an update for Xbox and PS3 to solve some issues, if not then the next day after that.

However we still have pissed gamers that are making death wishes.

I agree that "it is what you paid for" - that doesn't mean one has to get all worked up about it. I found that life becomes much more enjoyable for everyone involved if one simply takes the chill pill and simply does something else until the stuff works.
I'd probably get grumpy and annoyed if this were to last for several weeks, but immediately? Meh. Guess I've already become too Irish for that.

you missed out on the multiplayer in the first two games I take it?

GOD i miss GTA 1 and 2 multiplayer... worse graphics, but sooo much fun..

now GTA is so tame... no more missions where I have to fill up busses with loads of people, preferably large groups of boy scouts, then drive them all to the hot dog plant to get made into hot dogs?

Well after immense faffing about including deleting the original update and starting a new character, who actually looks cool (my first one looked like a 60s heart throb), I got online. The tutorial crashed twice, and I still maintain the forced tutorial was horribly bungled - this is not due to overloaded servers, it just didn't work - but then I met up with a friend and played.

For six hours, with just enough time for dinner and a dump in between.

As previous posters have said, this game, once working, utterly blitzes everything else in your life out of the window. Prepare to spend weeks driving cars over mountains, drag racing down busy motorways and generally being amazed how good a game can be when they finally get it right.

The Character Generator is hideously awkward to use, but I accidentally ended up with a character that strongly resembles Kara Thrace (Katee Sackhoff), "Starbuck" from Battlestar Galactica. I'm quite pleased with it now, looks badass with cropped jeans, combat boots, a leather jacket and bikini and as many tattoos as I can cram onto her.

I was going to make a 2nd character based on Jax from Sons of Anarchy but I think I'll just stick with Starbuck now.
