So welcome to the Internet!

Yep. You seem to have the misconception that I've said anything to the contrary. The OP asked for the best way to get a solid foundation of knowledge about the lore of the setting. Best, not cheapest. I gave my own opinion on how one would get that knowledge. They can take it or leave it, and so can you.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

The way I believe is best for someone who wants to get deeper in the fluff is to first go buy the rule book, it always has a great overview of the 40k universe at large. Then go to the wiki, or Lexicanum, read more of the races and what is going on in the 40k verse, but don't take any of it to heart. Since it is unofficial, it is going to have mistakes and as was mentions before misinterpretations. Finally once you have found a race or military group you like, buy their codices and continue on, looking at Lexi and wiki but never taking it to heart.

Also Lexi really is has done a great job with what they have at their disposal. I don't mind if someone uses lexi as a source, and I can't blame them. I'm one of them, as was mentioned before money is a huge issue with this game, everything is expensive.

Ok I get it.
For me, being free is the main reason it is the best way. Best because of being cheapest.
mmmm... Perhaps you are right and I am influenced by my lack of disposable income.

So we've seen people arguing for Codexes, Rulebooks, Black Library, Lexicanum, and more.

Personally, I'd recommend starting with the rulebook fluff, then using all of these. Because they all have interesting information about the 40K universe, and are all (variably) reliable. Reliability is a non-issue unless you're going to be discussing fluff at great lengths. "There is no canon" and all that...

Pretre: OOOOHHHHH snap. That's like driving away from hitting a pedestrian.
Pacific:First person to Photoshop a GW store into the streets of Kabul wins the thread.
Selym: "Be true to thyself, play Chaos" - Jesus, Daemon Prince of Cegorach.
H.B.M.C: You can't lobotomise someone twice.

Before I was happy to leave 40k as a sort of hazy, basic understanding in the back of my mind. But some of the fluff that I've read, especially Horus Heresy and Chaos/Chaos Marine stuff, seems really cool.

Just wondering where's the best place to start in getting a solid understanding of the 40k setting? Don't need *all* of the details, just a nice, solid comprehension of the good bits of the fluff.

You can have a look at the thread in my signature.

It has some great fluff resources.
