Lots of terrain, gutter space, and a storage shelf underneath. I'd also put a lip around the edge board to lower the chance of stuff getting knocked off or runaway dice. I wouldn't texture the top with sand or gravel because that tends to be rough on book covers, especially shiny hardback books.
