A better picture of the Ashigaru. I think these are pretty much finished besides the bases. I may touch them up a little later to improve them though as they look a little flat.

Look pretty solid. Would suck to be some kind of badass samurai and get downed by some mook's arrow. Oh the indignity, he'd have to end himself before the arrow finished the job.

Bit like this Takeda general

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamamoto_Kansuke_(general)

Apparently after his battle plan went wrong he charged into battle alone getting wounded several times before retiring to a nearby hill to finish himself off.

Wasn't his fault though. His battle plan was to send men to sneak up to the enemy camp and ambush them. What he didn't realise is some how the enemy general had predicted this the men who snuck there at night found the enemy camp abandoned and the enemy troops were waiting at the Takeda camp ready to attack. Feeling he had failed in his duty he picked up a spear and stormed the enemy despite being 60 with a lame leg and eye.

The battle ended with huge casualties on both sides.

Gah, large battles with huge casualties generally tend to suck.

The wiki article suggests it was a victory anyway though? Well maybe it settled his ghost.

From what I have read it was considered a victory for by some Takeda but they lost a large number of their generals including the Daimyo's brother. Certainly wasn't a clear victory for either party.

Ahh yes. It sounds much like me trying to do maintenance on my airbrush, much time is wasted, and while it may work a little better, it's hard to call it a decisive win

Thank you.

I am going to add some gloss to the armour to make it shine and maybe try to highlight the skin a little, especially the face but that will come later once I have more of them done.

So half of my Ashigaru unit is painted and based. Base is still a little wet but I wanted to photograph them. Need to dig out the GF's camera in the future instead of the Ipad although there is only so much a camera can make up for poor lighting. Sorry the picture quality isnt great. Will try to get some better shots up when I have more daylight to aid me. Probably when the whole unit is done.

Any critique, tips or suggestions are welcome as always.

Did you use premade flower tufts or did you brush on some glue and sprinkle flock?

I ask, as I've tried to mimic a dusting of snow by brushing on some light pva and flocking as seen here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/571701-.html?m=2

I've though of trying it with other stuff to make clumps of flowers.

Premade sorry

I bought them on ebay from this seller

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/draxmodels/m.html

£4 got me about 25 green tufts and about 25 mixed flower tuffts. They are alittle to big for basing on pennies though so I have to cut them smaller.

Your ones look good but maybe a little to heavy on the snow.

I wanted to add this. Its a mock up of how my General will be based. Its mostly held together with blue tack and optimisum. I will probably change the banner bearer to a running one but my running banner bearer decided blue tack wouldnt hold him together so I swapped him out for one cast all in one with the banner already attached.

The General will stay the same unless I find a better Uesgui Kenshin model and so will the body guard unless I can find a model with an Ogre mask and Kanabo (Apparently Steel Fist will be releasing one but I dont know when exactly.

I may get the base redone with one of the penny cut outs further forward and one further back so they look less in line.

Looks like your bow-guys are ready to put an end to some samurai's legacy before he gets a chance to close distance. I really like your commander and entourage display base, pretty spiffy.

Wanted to show what I am working on atm. My Archer unit is half finished but after that I have two arquebus units to paint up.

Most of the Archers are Old Glory and all of the Arquebus are Perry.

Group Shot. Archers in the middle

Arquebus Unit One. There are two Samurai in the First row

Archer Unit: Unit Leader is from Perry

Sweet, cant wait to see what you do with them! That's a respectable amount of metal minis, this samurai army is obviously a labor of love huh

Keep up the good work!

The grunt passing the rifle forward to his boss is great too, and probably a good idea if the samurai is better trained.

Yeah I am enjoying the army and cant wait to see it all painted up. By the time I retire it might be possible.

Most of my army are metal.

To add a little more of a fantasy element to my army I am going to be using Ogres as part of my Kingdom of Men List. Of course being Samurai they will be Oni instead.

Put in an order for three Oni from Dixon. Only one of them has a picture on the website. I ordered him and two others. If they are any good I will order some more in the future.

Hmm those look pretty cool in theory. And they should match your theme well enough.

Yeah they are also less than £2 each where as other oni I could find were 3-6 times that,

Good luck with the Oni. I was unimpressed with their Ashigaru and Monks.

Yeah I don't like dixons standard troops either. Espeically because they are priced similar to perry and have pumpkin heads.

Hopefully though dodgy proportions wont be a factor so much in mythical creatures. Thats my hope anyway.

If you end up not being happy with Dixon, you could try Bushido's Oni:

http://bushido-thegame.com/savage-wave

They have some nice looking Oni that should work well. More expensive, but nice.

And I agree with your comments on my snow, but it was a trial. So next time I will try and 'thin it out' a bit.

Thanks Maniac I will let you know. Both Bushido and Kensei have some decent Oni but I was hoping not to pay that price. If the Dixon are not very good I will not buy anymore but use them temoprarily until I can afford the more expnesive ones.

The best Ogre Proxies for me would be the old Rackham Dai Bakemonos but they are only available as dodgy recasts or expensive second hand. They look great though.

Yeah I have I mentioned Kesnei a few posts back. Some of there Oni are really nice. Their other models are nice to but a bit pricy and the heads and hands look to small next to some of my other models. Thanks for the link none the less though.

I kind wrote off dixons entire samurai range off due to the large head and hands but I am Surprisingly impressed with the oni from dixon turns out there a few demons in the rough, I also picked up a sumo from them because I have wanted a sumo for a while. I heard their Ronin were scaled closer to other manufacturers so I order one and it looks pretty good. In the bellow photos the half painted samurai is perry the rest are ronin.

As you can see the Oni looks suitably imposing next to the samurai and the ronin is well scaled alongside the samurai.

Slightly better shot of the Oni

Not dissapointed at all with ordering from dixon.

Sweet, glad that worked out for you. They look a touch small compared to some other ogres but since they're going to be a bright color, red usually isn't it.. or was it blue, if you put them on the right sized bases or tray they should do fine. And thematically they are certainly superior.

Wales: Where the Men are Men and the sheep are Scared.

They do look a little smaller than I would like. And the poses don't help with that but thematically and price wise they work well.

Ian probably going to paint them red, but I will look to see what other colours oni were too.
