That's where I was going - you aren't hitting a unit but model....

*edit* if I am confused about the circumstance, feel free to ignore this. I am only talking about direct melee attacks.

I don't know where people are getting that you can choose to attack the unit instead of the champion if the model is only in B2B with the champion.

pg 48 Who Can Strike?
"Normally, a warrior can only strike blows against an enemy model in base contact."

If you are only in B2B with the Champion, you MUST attack the champion. The Champion rules do not give any exceptions to this. This rule also uses model, not unit.

pg 48 Dividing Attacks
"If a model is touching enemies with different characteristic profiles..."
Ok, so you have a 25 mm champion at the edge of a unit. A facing unit of the same width but 20 mm bases is attacking. Are the guys at the edge forced to attack him? The first bit of the attacking champions rule says that you may choose to attack the champion, not that you are forced to.

Well, if you are only in B2B with the Champion, this doesn't apply.

pg 93 Champions and Close Combat
"Note that any extra wounds inflicted upon a champion do not carry over onto the rest of the unit - once the champion is slain, excess wounds are lost."

This reinforces the Champion is a separate entity within the unit.

If the Champion is the only model in the unit in B2B, only the Champion can absorb the attacks, and the wounds do not carry over per pg 93.

You attack models directly who are in B2B, not units.

You MUST attack the champion if he is the only model in B2B. Otherwise, what model can you attack as you can only attack models in B2B unless given explicit permission (such as via supporting attacks). You are not given permission to withhold attacks, either, so the champion eats the attacks.

The whole point of you "may" attack the champion is if you are in B2B with more than one model with different profiles, aka pg48 and Dividing Attacks.

So yes, if the champion is on the edge of a unit of Calvary, and they get charged on that one side, the champion is the only one who can take any wounds until he is dead.

In this case, only the Calvary champ would be able to be attacked and wounded. (I am sure the formatting sucks, sorry.)

I suggest you don't believe anything posted by thedarkavenger unless confirmed by other regular posters here at Dakka. He has shown he is incapable of basic English comprehension.
