Ideas - Supreme Commander - large scale battles with a focus on large bases, shields, siege artillery and HUGE freaking monster machines that thunder over the battlefield. Forged Alliance expansion adds a new faction and a few new big machines.
Has a story campaign mode

Supreme Commander 2 - shifts the focus a little. Resourcing is easier and the metal makers are gone so its back to contesting resource points instead of building stupidly huge bases. It's solid good fun and I've enjoyed it (it's also less system demanding than the other sup-com games)
Has a story campaign mode

Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion - great fun if you like space. It's like a regular RTS game, but instead of a single map you've a series of battle grounds (planets) linked together by corridors. All running in real time and yet very manageable without getting overwhelmed. The big titan battle ships and space stations also make for great fun to play with
Has no story mode

Conquest Frontier Wars - this is basically older Sins. Not the same game nor company, but the general game structure is of a similar nature. 3 factions and a lot of fun a good old classic game (sold on GOG)
Does have a story mode.

That's a few off the top of my head - RTS sadly hasn't really had anything in a fairly long while and most of what we have had is in the form of new titles for the Total War series of games; which offer turn based empire management which then lets you control battle encounters in real time (With all the titles after Empires now having real time ship battles - in earlier games its auto resolved).

If you don't mind the space stuff, Endless Space is fairly fun and pretty undemanding, requirements wise.

Star Trek Armada is another old RTS that may be worth looking into that will probably run on a calculator, if you can find a copy. Considering its a Star Trek game its actually quite good.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Oh yeah! I played the heck out of Armada as a kid. Great game.

And don't knock a game just because it's Star Trek. They had some pretty bad ones I'll admit but they also had Elite Force and Klingon Academy.

EDIT: Dang I just remembered Klingon Academy. I 100% have to do that for my channel now. Such a fun game, and I never did beat it.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

I can vouch for SupCom 1 and 2 as well. And of course there's always tons of Tower Defense games if you're in to a more casual strategy game.

If you want a good Tower Defence game with a story check out Defender's Quest. Great fun and more engaging than most other tower defence games.

I get bored of tower defense pretty quickly. That's a facebook game isn't it? might give it a shot for a quick fix

That's like saying "I got bored of First Person Shooter really quickly. That's a Facebook game, right?"

No, Tower Defense is a sub-genre within the Real-Time Strategy genre. There's at least tens of thousands of games within the category. Some blend in other game types (Sanctum and Orcs Must Die! come to mind, adding in FPS and Action, respectively), as well.

A few examples:

It's probably not what you're looking for, but Hegemony Gold is a really, really fun game. It's kinda like what you get if you play a total war game but real time and the battles happen at the same time as the maneuvering. You have to manage supply lines as well. It's like $20 or something as well, which isn't too bad at all.

I normally get bored with them too - Defenders Quest is an exception and quite entertaining (I think they've still got a demo up on their main page).

Also some like Sanctum add some spice by blending tower defence with first person shooting.

Dungeon Defenders is a pretty fun little tower defense game.

I wasn't assuming that it was a facebook game because it was a tower defence game, I thought I saw an ad for it on facebook awhile ago.
I'll give it a shot. I'm currently waiting for the demo to load. Thanks again for the help. I've actually put quite a few games on my list of games to try

Rome total war the first one its classic I personally still play it with a very active modding community means you always have something new to play. As well as shogun total war the first one for similar reasons to rome depends on what your favored area is.
