He shuts up after being told he's killing the mood. And he's good for getting a game when every else is busy.
He's told my brother that he's thinking of quitting because of me, though. I feel a bit bad, but I'm not the one who thought a terminator is an acceptable proxy for a vindicator, and I'm not the one who says that a FW decimator is too overpowered and should be confined to apocalypse and not a heartbeat later putting a storm eagle on the board.

Thus, friends are dicks. Well, some are. I might pop down to the local gaming store and find a game, if I feel brave.

Well if you ever find yourself in South Wales for any reason I'd be happy to play you on fair terms.

Deal. Same if you ever find yourself in Essex.

It's like anything: the first one is hard, but it gets easier after that. Just tell whomever your playing that you've been in a hardcore house rules league and you might get a rule or two wrong (even if you won't).
It will make them more likely to be helpful and your first experience a good one.

Can you post a pic of the board next time?
The book pretty clearly tells you that 25% terrain is usually enough. A lot of people probably get closer to 40% in some games, but really, 25% is enough. If you're playing 2K armies, there's not enough room for more than that and stil be able to meneuver.
A pic might help us have an opinion.

Jesus christ, if i had "gaming friends" like you guys describe, i'd flat out quit gaming.
Sounds like some people in this thread need to find some new opponents. I play with my three closest friends about 80% of the time. Nary a single shenanigan like this.

gaming isn't the issue. those particular people are. Which is why you always have to be recruiting. Hehehe.

I can sympathize a little. I see a lot a people saying "Don't play with them." But it's not always that easy. Sometimes these are the only people available to play with.
And what can be worse is refusing to play is sometimes seen as a form of poor sportsman ship.

Passive-aggressive but competitive personality types are always a challenge to deal with, regardless of the venue.

I skip the passive part. It's fakey. I want to win. I don't care if i lose because if i do it's probably well deserved, but I DO want to win.
I see no problem with that. The only diff between me and my opponent may be that I admit it.
But I LOVE winning when its with an army that people poo poo or underestimate. My moniker is quite appropriate: i dont tend to net lists and i spend a lot more of my energy thinking about tactics than I do lists.
So My advice is to stop hating the losing so much. Losing isn't a bad thing if you had fun. maybe tell them that "Hey... i may or may not lose anyways, but when i do lose, i want to have fun doing it and rthis isn't fun to me...so make it fun for me or i walk".
and again...pics would help.

If you admit you want to win, it's not passive aggressive, it's assertive.
Passive-aggressive is acting like a dick when you don't get your way. Sighing, looking forlorn, etc.
Losing with grace-and winning with grace-is the essence of sportsmanship.
