1500 for normal games, 2000+ for anything that's just for fun.

1500, to me, is the perfect middle ground. You can take some bigger, more expensive models without going overboard, you need to strike a fine balance between troops and non-troops without just throwing everything into the list. You can't just take whatever you want, you really have to think about what you're going to do with your points - but you DO have the wiggle room to take some bigger things without feeling like you're sacrificing troops to do it.

But with that said, I also think it's immensely fun to just throw everything you can into a list. It's especially true for me as a Tau player, because the more points you have, the more support you can bring to the board, more Pathfinders and Broadsides, that second Riptide or a special HQ with some Crisis Suits as backup. 2000 lets you go a little more hog-wild, it lets you take your big nasties while still being able to fill out your troops.

I mostly play "Apoc Lite" games with my friends (~2500 pts. per side), but that's because there are four of us and usually all of us want to play at the same time, so we end up doing 2v2 regularly.

However, I'd like to play some 1v1 games in the 1500-2000 pts. range. It is enough to fit the majority of my preferred units.

What he said. I like big games more but the occasional 1000k game is good once in a while.

I'll take whatever I can get to be honest- hard to get buddies together for a game lately. I usually prefer 2000, although the new 200pt kill teams are really catching my eye.

Plus other games- miniature and cardboard both.

1850 is a really good number. Enough points that you can drop 500 points on a unit and still have enough to flesh out the rest of the army, but not enough points that you can easily fit in everything you want, you still need to make some tougher choices.

I feel that under 1500, the game can degenerate into RPS matchups. It doesn't have to, but sometimes someone writes a lopsided list and a TAC list simply lacks the tools to handle it at 1k.

1500 and 1750pt games make for the best games with me =) at 1500 I feel like I just about got everything and I enjoy the fact neither my opponent and I will have everything we want on the field. At 1750pts I generally feel that everything I want is in my list anything higher and I am trying to stuff units in despite the fact that the general concept of my army was met at 1750pts.

My preferred points limit is 1000 points. I feel that 40K is a lot more balanced at lower point values. compared to 1500+. The game just doesn't seem to handle all the min-max'ing that goes on higher levels, and some units definitely weren't designed to be spammed.

At 1000 points, it feels like almost every unit is viable, which is nice.

I like 1850, 2000, 3000 pts games. It's hard to find time to play these days that small games don't worth the effort to load/unload models and drive to local stores. I also believe 40k factions balance better at this level, since you can fill in the hole with allies and so forth. In 750 and less games, if you have army with bad troops then you are pretty much playing at disadvantage.

3 to 4 is about right for me, normally includes a super heavy per side. Takes about four hours to play through.

1500-2k. Though i should practice playing smaller point sizes, as I hate games taking over an hour and a half.

I prefer to play at any points level that can be agreed upon. The smallest game I've ever played was 400 points and the largest was 5,000. Never played Apocalypse.

I have to say that my game area plays 1500 at the FLGS

I like 1500 as a maximum because once you hit 2000 I find there is a lot of vehichles and such on the field.
At home I usually play 750, 1000, 1250 mainly because it makes you think about what to take and not just sacrifice units because that is a certain points value.

I played 1500 exclusively when I started again to help some friends practice and iron out their lists for a tournament. Since then I've done 2500pt games and have a 3000pt game on Saturday and I gotta say I really enjoy the bigger games. The armies look great on the board and I find it to be a more challenging game as there are more threats to deal with and way more angles that need to be covered. Plus 1 good round of shooting isn't usually the difference between a win and a loss which is important since my usual opponent has horrendous luck with rolls (I've seen him fail 8/12 2+ saves in a single throw)
