nah its pretty simple. If you dont roll the 3d6 then the models in the unit can not pass through terrain, even if range allowed them to do so.

But either way, model a, in order to charge model d, has to pass through terrain (regardless of whether he stops on the opposite side of the wall) because in order to get into b2b he would have to. Therefore you would roll 3d6. in the above scenario.

Except you must:
"Move the initial charger into contact with the nearest enemy model in the unit being charged, using the shortest possible route." page 21, BRB
and
"models that are both in base contact with a barricade and within 2" of each other are treated as being in base contact." page 104, BRB

So the shortest distance to base contact is stopping on the other side of the wall.

No, it just means that if you fail to get into base contact despite attempting to get there (which would trigger the difficult terrain rules) you are permitted to ignore the failure, place the model in contact with the wall, and count the models as being engaged with each other.

The lesson here of course is to back up 0.00000000000001" from the wall so they can't charge you.

Incorrect. It states in no uncertain terms that if both models are in base contact with the wall and within two inches of each other, they count as being in base contact. As you are told(not given the option) to take the shortest possible route you must stop at base contact with the wall within two inches of the enemy model because that is the shortest route to base contact.

You go ahead and out your model 0.00000000000001" away from the wall. I will hop that wall place my hormagaunts bases on top of your models bases if I must to get into base contact. Nothing says my models must stand fully upright and no rule stops an assaulting unit from stepping on the targets toes

Only for purposes of charge moves. Determining if the path the unit will take crosses difficult terrain happens before any models are moved.

Yeah, good luck making that "I can put my models on top of yours" argument work with anyone...

Determining a path for each model is not required. Like I said, the picture is not a rule.

If my opponent is going to take advantage of the letter of the law so will I. This is not common in my group though as we frown on taking advantage of loopholes in the rules. No one has tried this one yet but if someone did it would be house ruled in short order. On that same token, though per RAW I don't think I should have to roll difficult terrain to assault models in base contact with a wall, I do anyways for HWYPI because I feel it's more in the spirit of the game.
