I considered ordering from a variety of suppliers, but overseas shipping is just too expensive. I ended up cutting trays from sheet styrene, lining the front and sides with plastic rod, and laying down adhesive-backed steel paper. Then I mount the minis on sheet magnet, and viola! homemade magnetic movement trays. A good solution for those of us with more time than money.

I made my first movement trays out of plastic signs from the hardware store locally..

Turns out you can get 6 or more trays from a "Beware of Dog" or "Garage Sale" sign.. lined with sprue or long matchwood.. cheap and durable!

I use the Warbases ones with holes for my Mantic models and just glue 'em in with white glue the same time I paint/flock the base.

For non Mantic models I multibase onto normal Warbases bases (100x80 for normal regiments etc)

All my GW stuff is still on individual bases but I have tons of the old GW movement trays that pretty much fit into KoW anyway.

I've been thinking about thin mdf, or plasticard... whichever works out cheaper / better

The skaven army on my shelf has GW movement trays; can't fault them, theyre decent bits of kit, just the pricing as with anything GW. - you get two sheets, and a sprue of the border pieces. Each sheet has a grid etched in on both sides; one 10by10 20mm squares, one 8by8 25mm squares.

They get used in terrain a lot as tiled flooring as far as I've seen. For example my local GW store had its Balins Tomb LotR board all but covered in them.

But tbh... £10 rrp... jog on!

It took me 2seconds to find a better deal on plasticard

GW= 200mm square sheet, twice.

80thou (2mm) plasticard sheet; pack of 5 A4 (297by210mm) £9.99 on ebay - which I'm sure wont be the best deal around.

Add a pack of square, or better yet triangular rods to make the edges with if you need them and I think we just beat GW's value per area of base by quite a lot.

Been thinking about acrylic sheet (aka perspex or plexiglass) for this job, could have them clear that way, or coloured - maybe different colours for different forces could be handy for a game against the same race, or more than 2 players.

Whatever I come up with should get documented on this blog I want to do.

To make one with those circular holes in, youl want a tool for cutting holes I'm sure theres a propper term, but theyre used mostly for cutting holes for pipes with a drill when traditional drill bits are too small, you use these.

- bit of googling; theyre called hole saw's

http://www.my-tool-shed.co.uk/p18467/Black_%26_Decker_X81005_Holesaw_Set_7piece/product_info.html?utm_source=googleversafeed&vfsku=18467&gpla=pla&gclid=CISOsLOpk7wCFRLMtAodlSgAOQ

heres a set of them in sizes 25 to 62mm, but finding the size you need shouldnt be too hard; just measure (if its not already known) the diameter of the round bits on the figures, and thats the size you want

With a little care you could make a sheet with holes and attach it to a slid sheet to give you a tray with slots for figures where-ever you like.

Mantic's integral bases are 15mm circles.

Clear acrylic has been catching my eye recently. I believe I'm going to base my warpath Corporation and Veer-myn on clear acrylic round bases.

only 15mm eh could probably use a large drill bit to get that sized hole.
Im not sure If having the figures counter sunk into the base is necessary, il have to wait and see how it looks with and without.

I've been looking at character models, I guess avatars of war dont look too out of place with Mantic figures, as they sell them on the website in their own section (altho for an inflated price)

How about Scibor Miniatures?

Dwarf King? - http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1313

Dwarf Standard Bearer - http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1046

Still flicking through Scibors range of figures, anyone know if they have a suitable Berserker Lord, or Warsmith?

Currently looking at Avatars of War 'Dwarf Master Gunner' and 'Bör Dragonbane' for those, with AoW Undead Vampiress and Necromancer too, still seeking a nice Lich, Revenant King, Cursed Pharaoh and undead Pegasus though

Edit;
Oooh payday tonight ; by the time I get back from work lol (damned night work - gets in the way of gaming evenings all the time!)
My current shopping list is the two £99.99 army deals for undead and dwarfs; bloodmire legion, and thorgersons storm of steel.

Then to pop over to Wayland Games and pick up a selection of character figures; this is rather than the two packs of 4 characters from mantic.

Dwarf master Gunner (Avatars of War) - Warsmith? - £8.95
Bor Dragonbane (Avatars of War) - Berserker Lord? - £ 9.35
28/30mm dwarf general 2 (Scibor) - Dawrf King? - £5.67
28/30mm dwarf standard (scibor) - Battle Standard Bearer? - £ 5.67

Necromancer (Avatars of War) - £8.90
Vampire countess/wizard (Avatars of War) £9.35
Lich with staff (Otherworld Miniatures) - £5.40

Total spend at wayland - £56.54 - a bit more than the £35 from mantic for two 4 packs, but with the undead characters in the army deal plus these lot I should have a wide selection to play with still will shop around before hitting the buy it button later on hehe

Could you not just glue the mantic square bases together to form a movement tray then slow the figures in and out as needed?

Sides aren't perfect. I've tried this, it doesn't work well.

Maybe mount them onto a sheet of thin plasticard to keep it flat, and the cracks ontop either show a nicely defined grid or are filled in when the base gets textured...either way

I'm considering the merits of making a tray out of 2 sheets (of whatever material) - top one with holes drilled, versus sticking some mantic bases onto a sheet and hiding their existence by building up a thick texture - could even add a rim and fill all around making it flat again. - I dont forsee myself using 20 models to represent a normal 5 by4 block of models; just a base that is the same size; so 100mm by 80mm with enough models to suitably represent the unit and leave some room for scenic stuff or something useful like a damage counter and/or wavering status indicator.

So, after chatting with my nephew earlier today, he's keen on goblins, undead, or abyssal dwarfs.

Being as I'm keen on goblins and undead, well I think itle be those two.
The Mantic goblins are growing on me a little, the price is hard to beat I've priced up an army at wayland games, 1300-1500 points for roughly £120;

80 spitters
40 sharpsticks
20 fleabag riders
6 trolls
2 mincers (so far thats the goblin army set twice)
biggit
wiz
flaggit (triple pack of characters)
and a warhammer giant (better giant kits out there?)

Maybe add a GW rock thrower

I do genuinly prefer the GW Night Goblins aesthetic, Would like to do a mix of gw night goblins and gw regular goblins ideally... but for that £120 I can only just get the 120 goblin infantry, let alone the trolls, warmachines characters and giant. (I'd also like to use a Squig Gobba as a big rock thrower with night goblins)

For undead I cant argue with the Bloodmire Legion although I count that to be over 2000 points, meaning I need more goblins, or less undead
Maybe I can bulk out the goblins by putting 30 figures (less?) on a 40 figure base; although if i do the same with undead then i still need more gobbos!

Check out Mierce's Albainn giants - I use 'em for my Goblin giants.

Other options for giants are the Reaper Bones models - especially for an army you'll be sharing with your nephew. Cheap and you can get a few options, and he can even have a go at painting them without risking a super-expensive model.

Ironically with a lot of these figures the biggest drawback for me is that I'm in USA, and most of these really good minis companies, amazing terrain and movement trays are overseas so it's going to cost me a lot to get them imported :(

He can have a go at painting. I'm no stranger to stripping models clean for a repaint, although I've only had experience with GW figures for that. I assume that its done to all brands though?
We've (I've) already got him a 40k Chaos Marine force to get painted and then build upon

so far 40 cultists, 30-40 power armour marines, 2 predator/rhino's, landraider, hellbrute, terminator lord, raptors.
Wanted him to have a bunch of troops with a taste of elites, fast and heavy to get started with lol.

The fantasy I think will both be my armies but I'm buying two so we can play, if he takes a liking to it then he can probably just have them off me.(I've always had a softspot for the fantasy stuff over the sci fi)

Had a PM about some GW goblins I might be able to pick up on the cheap, so am holding off for word on that
theres always ebay too, I'm sure theres still Battle for Skull Pass goblins going.
So i'l wait and consider how much it might set me back for a buttload of 2nd hand goblins, I don't mind buying a few brand new kits really just not hundreds of models at GW prices hehe.
I figure I can make 15 models fill out a regiment base for 20figures without them looking too thinly spread. so 60 =80 between 100 and 150 goblins ought to cover it! Then I'l have to look at the other stuff; trolls, warmachines, giants, characters etc.
The mantic goblins have the price point on their side; £120 for a 1500point ish army containing 120 goblins at wayland games mentioned above.
GW ones have a little variety and a niche styling of the night goblins that I like. - In my mind I've got night goblins for spitters and sharpsticks and the regular goblins as rabble.

Or a section themed after each - wolf riders and rock lobbers with the regular gobbo's, And squig herders / hoppers and squig gobba with the night gobbo's
Another figure I saw for a Giant was Collossal Squig...
Lol I know I know thats all GW/FW stuff but I do like their greenskins!

Mantic undead vs GW greenskins seems very possible lol

Warbases has really good shipping prices, I've ordered from them a half dozen times at least.

As for Mierce, you can buy them from TheWarStore or even on ebay. In fact the WarStore ebay account has several Mierce models on sale.

My friend uses a GW night goblin army for his goblins, and let me tell you, multibased night goblins looks GREAT. he made several regiment and horde units with those skull pass night goblins just pouring over hills and rocks... the army just looked phenomenal. if you can get those skull pass night goblins cheap then go for it.

Im just going to throw it out there that I noticed GW used regiment basing in their display work;

(sometimes - many units dont have this on show)
