Tau are a "herd" species. They don't really have the nuclear family idea. In the case described, they'd give the child to a Gue'vesa to raise (since a Tau probably cannot nurse a human child).

There's also the fact that a woman who is 9 months pregnant is not really capable of doing much of anything physical to save anyone from any of the dangers present in the setting of 40K. From the description of the scenario, this sounds like a combat setting, which she is simply not in any physical condition to do much about.

Also... Ethereals are not soldiers. Why would the boy child have any talent for combat? Even if he were "adopted" by an Ethereal, he'd more likely be trained as a philosopher and leader, not a soldier.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
