But the vigilante might gain strength here, which will be bad if the border is not secured. PROTIP legalizing illegal aliens will not secure the border.
The next major Al Qaeda or Hezzbullah attack here will come from people who crossed the Southern border.
It hasn't the last few times it was tried

You talk about being armed to the teeth with battleships and subs, but if the Cartels play the congressional oversight committee card, then Texas is doomed! Doomed! There is not a military on earth (or even in the past) that can stand up to the red tape of congress On a more serious note, I've talked before of the US government having plans to militarise the border states if things spill over from Mexico. Best get digging that trench. Yes nothing can stop the Red Tape Monster. The US has had a militarized southern border several times in its history. The Dems act like thats a big deal, but its not. I still advocate Stephen Colbert's plan to build a 3000 mile porch and stock it with crochety old people in rocking chairs.

Aren't FARC heavily involved in the drug trade themselves, and stand outside the law as well as directly opposing the government?
That's basically step 17. The emergence of FARC started kinda like this (different macro-level economic problems, but the localized results were the same)
I have trouble drawing parallels here. FARC started out (and always has been) a communist rebel militia intended to fight against the government with the intent of driving it out of areas so that communist zones (for lack of a better term) could be established within Colombian borders. These are common citizens fed up with organizations that aren't too far removed from FARC (aka Drug Cartels) that are banding together to defend eachother from non-government entities because the Government itself is unable to handle the situation. FARC was only ever recognized as a terrorist/guerilla organization, the Mexican government is effectively deputizing these 'vigilantes' instead and making them extensions of the law-enforcement apparatus. Its apples and oranges. While I don't doubt the likelihood that these organizations *could* (and likely will) evolve into a similar guerilla movement, there isn't much similarity in the way the two have started.
A more apt comparison could be made I'm sure, yet one escapes me at the moment.
You seem to be under the impression that the FARC of the 1990s is what FARC started out as in the aftermath of La Violencia. It is not. In the early 1960s, what would later become FARC began as small communities of vigilantes attempting to fight off the encroachment of Columbia's equivalent robber barons.
Is that not what I just said? "Communist rebel militia intended to fight against the government with the intent of driving it out of areas so that communist zones could be established within Colombian borders." The 'robber barons' you speak of were the government (or, at the very least, were supported by the government) with the main point of contention being the Accelerated Economic Development plan which was stripping small-time family farmers of their land in favor of industrialized agriculture for export. These small-time farmers were backed by Colombias communist party, and in turn they bought into the communist ideals, eventually resulting in the formation of FARC following an attack by the Colombian government against a pseudo-breakaway republic/guerilla enclave.
Yes, I know all about the history of FARC, there really is little in common between their development and these Mexican self-defense groups except that they were both 'defense communities'. While on the surface that might seem like enough to draw a parallel, you have to consider that in FARCs case it was 'defense against the government' whereas in the Mexicans case its 'defense against lawlessness.'

Step 1 is the creation of Islamic militia X. Step 2 is the emergence of the eqivalent of notable Islamic millitant/terrorist organization Y. It may not be classroom accurate, but I certainly understand what he was saying though I don't think it will be the case.
Random thought, La Violencia/The Violence sounds cooler than The Lawlessness

In sympathy with my Mexican compadres I just ordered a Mossberg Field and Security Combo 12 gauge from Bud's. I should get it right before I get my pistol back from the gunsmith in two weeks.
Now just to convince the wife I need a good 30-06 bolt action for my birthday and I am fully stocked for the Zombie Games...

Wouldn't have to do much with Texas. We already have (I think) The largest national guard. We also have several military bases, including one of the largest on the US, as well was one already on the border!
Bring it.
