You're making the common mistake of assuming that powerful lists and themed lists are mutually exclusive concepts. In reality most "themed" lists aren't any fluffier than an optimized competitive list, they just have lots of weak choices.

You are making the same mistake. He said makes it with a theme which doesn't mean purposefully poor. Just means theme choices is a main concern over just because its better choices. His way is not exclusive either.
