The Ecclesiarchy is rather obviously based on the Catholic Church in it's heydey of power with bits of Anglican and Orthodox churches.
Some sects hew closer to other religions (even polytheistic ones) but overall the moniker of "Catholic Space Nazis" fits the Imperium to a T.
