As a teen i don't have the time or money to become invested in another wargame to the extent that i have with Warhammer fantasy/ 40k and if they magically disappeared I would probably put more time into my other sport-y hobbies, do more school work or simply play more computer games. It takes a lot of effort to immerse yourself into an entirely new setting and truth be told it probably wouldn't be worth the effort.
While I don't want to derail the thread on to pricing, I have to mention that historical wargames are much cheaper than 40K, and have well established fluff backgrounds that offer a wide variation of interesting scenarios.
The problem with history is that you only ever get to play as bog standard humans wielding bog standard weaponry.
I love 40k's xenos.
I love the fact that it flaunts the rules of reality and is larger than life in every way.
I love 40k for many of the same reasons I love things like high powered super-hero comics, Gurren Lagaan, or Asura's Wrath. It's over the top.

Well, it will definitely be Warmachine.
There is already a move away from 40k/Fantasy to WM/Hordes in our gaming group. Some players moved totally shelfing everything from GW.

For table top sci-fi, I'd probably switch to D&D Battle System (from the 80s...I thik that's what its called).

I love you... XD Awesome. The Asura's Wrath DLC ending (stupid Capcom...) was amazing.
I love all the 40k fluff and world. I prefer the tongue in cheek grimdark more so.
But I've been painting other games armies right now in preparation for the transition away from 40k. I'll probably still go to tournaments as it guarantees 3 games and people coming with the same expectations, but that'll probably be about it. It's a crappy casual game (much to GW's chagrin) because of the balance swings. I can make the "dirtiest" Cryx army I want, but the game is still build in a way to make it beatable.

Would have to be X-wing.
I have been playing that a little lately and have found it to be extremely fun!
The models are plastic and hand painted and come out of the box ready to play - it truly is the frist fully painted army I own!
The balance in the game is spot on with the game decided by pilot skill and tactics, rather than who can afford to buy a void shield..
Highly recommend checking it out if you get the opportunity

I don't like Star Wars ( , I know, tar and feather me) and that's keeping me from playing that game. It looks amazing! Now if they made the same style of game set in the Mass Effect universe? Or maybe a cross over like Heroclix does all the time? Sign me up!
Imagine if they actually could get multiple licenses like Heroclix? SW vs. Star Trek vs. BSG vs. ... etc. etc. That'd be huge!

DZC. Superb balance, great tactical depth, pretty much impossible to make a cheese/spam list and models that are better than GWs, flat-out. The detail and QC is phenomenal. That and the game is expanding without leaving any armies behind or lagging.

If, for some reason, there was absolutely no possible way to play 40k, I guess I'd turn to whichever game was next most popular at my FLGS. I'd rather be able to get games in than anything else as a higher priority.
I've played good games and bad games, but, almost without exception (I'm looking at you, Mao), the worst games are the ones you never play.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
