Another vote for the duplicolor primers. I've had good luck with their white and a brick red color I found.

I used to be a complete GW Black rattlecan addict. I'd use it to prime anything. The White, I had trouble with powdery finishes but the Black went on smooth.

Now, however, I have gone Vallejo all the way. I bought black, grey, and white and a cheap suction feed external mix spraygun for about £16. I now start at the bottom of my models and spray upwards with the black, change to the grey - generally with a few drops of the black in as my bottle of grey seems rather light - and spray that whilst the black is still wet from the side so that the grey colout fades into the black around the knees of the figure. Then I add a thin coat of white (NOT a coat of thinned white) sprayed downwards to cover the head and shoulders.

Keeping my base colours thin enough, the effect of the different colours of primer show through and I get the effect of slightly more light at the top of the model than at the bottom.

This shows what I mean.

"Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control, genetics, and you'll get ten different answers, but there's one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years or a thousand years or a million years, eventually our Sun will grow cold and go out. When that happens, it won't just take us. It'll take Marilyn Monroe, and Lao-Tzu, and Einstein, and Morobuto, and Buddy Holly, and Aristophanes…then all of this…all of this…was for nothing. Unless we go to the stars." It sounds like Krylon was thrown under the bus for one person's opinion early on. Krylon is a great primer for models and the brand I have been using for years. Krylon used to supply spray cans to GW back when their spray cans didn't suck.

As with any primer you need to start spraying off the model, move the spraying can across the model and stop spraying off the model. This keeps buildup from happening. The white and black are both excellent products and are very reasonably priced.
