Except if the Emperor dies then the Astronomican dies with him. The IoM would collapse overnight since interstellar travel would become nigh on impossible, and Terra itself would be swallowed by the Warp since the Golden Throne is also all that is keeping the gate into the Webway that exists directly under the Palace shut.

Entire civilizations used to believe that if you didn't make constant human sacrifices the world would end. It's best to view the emperor as just another barbaric superstition of that type: countless innocents are slaughtered for nothing more than the sheer willful ignorance and stupidity of the Imperium's rulers.

It's the sort of thing where you can't afford to be wrong. The Aztecs used to perform human sacrifices to make the sun rise. In that particular case, they were wrong... but what if they hadn't been?

Also, the psykers that are killed every day are weak to the point of uselessness. The serve a far greater function and utility in death than they ever would have in life.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

The sacrificed Psykers are the ones who can't be "saved", who can't shackle their powers: considering when a psykers is possessed the Deamon may have the power to destroy the whole planet, yeah, at least they are helping the God-Emperor live with their sacrifice.

Without the big E, there's no Astronomicon, no Astronomicon, humanity is completely fethed.

Still, I believed the Big E wasn't exactly evil. Remember, when he started his Crusade the Xenos were preying on humanity: His whole, let us call it "political campaign" was created at a time humanity was extremely weak, scattered and whole populations were killed or enslaved by Xenos. No wonder one of his tenets was destroying Xenos.

Oh, and the Eldar are anything but Good. They will use any other race as their puppet. Sure, they MAY look good but when you have a race that goes "Say, these gentleman found an artifact X from planet Y that MAY, I repeat, MAY because tho we are good, our future reading thing isn't perfect, cause us some problems down the road. We better exterminated the whole damn thing just to be sure it never happens." I can't consider them "Good".

Tau are Good... when you don't say no to them. Then they are just another IoM in disguise.

I wouldn't start thinking about 40k in moral terms, otherwise you soon run into the problem of everyone being gaks. It's a struggle between order and chaos more than anything else.
