Gotcha, thanks
Going slightly OT, if anyone ever finds themselves in Scarborough ( UK) definitely check out Military Adventure Park; Ijust did their zombie apocalypse thing this weekend and had a blast, hence my sudden love for the shiny new hobby, can't recommend it enough.
Back on topic, what's the fps measurement stand for?

Yeah, zombie games are fairly popular. I've had a couple with some friends. They work best at night, pistols only, and flashlights.
And that's Feet Per Second. They're regulated for safety, same as paintball. Fields will have a chronograph to record how fast your gun is shooting to make sure it's not "too hot" for the field. The UK is a little more strict than the US.

So if you have a gun that's firing above the fps limit can they be easily set to fire slower? Like a twist of a dial? Or is it a case of gettigetting a different gear box / gun?
There were 3 of us in a blacked out building with a marshall acting as the squad corporal. Numerous different missions climaxing in a cod style zombie wave survival game, with full auto ak47 (spetsnaz?) guns. More fun than I ever thought I could have outside the bedroom lol

Certain guns have quick change springs, otherwise you have to go into the gearbox and change out it out (though if you're putting in a higher power spring it's recommended that you upgrade the rest of the gearbox to compensate for higher power). FPS is the speed that an individual BB is fired out of the gun, rate of fire is how fast the gun fires.

Most guns don't have that option, unfortunately. You'd probably have to get a weaker spring to knock the FPS down. But honestly, most guns don't shoot over 350 out of the box.
Haha, the bug has got a hold of you! It's a great game with great people. I love the sport, I just wish I had more time to play anymore. Adult life seems to take a lot of me free time

Personally I dont enjoy milsim, the respawn is usually 15 or more minutes so I spend half of the game waiting for respawn as I dont have the patience to camp in one spot for an hour.
Also everyone has better gear than me in those games.

I have a nice paintball mask and pockets for my kill-rag and an extra magazine. Unless you're using a feth-ton of low-caps, I'll never understand the people with all the gear. I like my 15-20 minute open-play matches.

It sucks, but at least some of the better brands make guns with it (ICS, the Masada series, some G&Gs). Mega I feel bad that you've met the goons of the milsim community, the community where I am tends to be more laid back (the over competitive guy normally go to one of the larger mixed paintball-airsoft parks in the area).

I prefer mid/low cap mags because I hate the high-cap rattle!
That and I'm a gas gun kind of guy...
But I don't think I could ever play a proper milsim. I play airsoft like I play most FPS games. Run at the enemy; die; respawn; repeat

Kill rag? I take it you wave this about when you've been gak so people know you're effectively out of action?
So what makes a good gun good and a bad gun bad? What should I look out for?

I prefer mid cap mags myself. I used to play a bit of milsim, but even when I wasn't I didn't like sitting there with one hand on the trigger and the other winding my mag the whole time. Felt kinda cheaty even for casual play.

Yes; they're what I mean when I say mid or low caps.
High caps are generally the type you'll need to wind up, and they rattle like a when you're running!
Mid/low caps use a single spring. They hold a lot less, but they don't need winding and they don't rattle, so the trade-off is worth it IMO.

Exactly. Sometimes it's hard to tell if someone is in-play or not, since most people don't like walking through a firefight between two teams. So, grab a bright red rag, and put it on your head. Problem solved!
kitch102 wrote:So what makes a good gun good and a bad gun bad? What should I look out for?

Most of the time, you can tell a cheaper gun just by looking/feeling the body. You can tell if something is made of cheap plastic/pot metal, and that's a good indication that the rest of the gun will be about the same. Pretty much all the brands that have been mentioned in the thread are good brands that makes quality rifles. When you find something you like, look up reviews online to get some more information. However, even expensive, higher quality guns can have the silliest problems. These guns to have a limited life expectancy, and will eventually need repairs
kitch102 wrote:Oh yeah, one other question - is there a magazine that you don't need to wind up on the bottom? I forgot to do that with 2 magazines in 1 game on Sunday!
Yup. There's High, Mid, and Low caps.
High Caps hold between 500-600, Mids usually hold between 180-120, and the only Lows I know of max at 30.
I use High Caps, but I use Flash Mags. Instead of winding that little wheel, there's a pull-cord that winds it for you. They work sooooo much better than typical highcaps. As for then noise, I like having my "tactical maracas" LOL

There is no need to reset it, you just need to load the mag again.
But you need a speed loader to load a mid cap and high caps can be loaded by hand.

Went to my local airsoft store today and tried out an m4 carbine which is apparently similar to the combat machines and, yeah, nice gun!
So aside from it feeling "right"how do you know youve got the right gun? Wjat do you look for?

Different strokes for different folks really!
I've been playing for about 10 years and I've had a variety of guns. Aesthetics is part of it - you want something that you'll like the look of. Future plans for the gun is another thing as some guns don't have the wide range of parts and accesories that others do (you'll be fine with an M4 in that regard!). Folks who play in CQB or heavily built up sites often prefer shorter-barreled guns or bullpup designs as they may need to maneuver in tight spaces. You might want a gun that uses the same kind of magazine as your friends so you can swap mags in-game. The list goes on!
I made a few mistakes with my first gun, which was a TM G36C. First mistake was that I bought a tactical vest to hold extra mags, however the one I got was for M4 mags and the G36 mags were a pain to fit the pouches. I then decided I was going to pimp it and do all the work myself and ended up making a bit of a mess of it. Then I ended up with a gun that held batteries with great difficulty, and had to do more work to sort that out.....if I'd taken my time and done a bit of research I could have avoided all those problems and saved myself a lot of time, hassle and money!
It's not a bad idea to just use hire guns for the first few games and have a blether with other players about their own guns. Most airsoft players are quite happy to show off the kit they use and give you various pointers.

Personal preference, really. Just gotta make the dive! If you think it feels good, you should be alright
kitch102 wrote:Human shields, yes or no?
Uhhh, huge no-no. Also, no blind-firing (shooting around cover without looking) or dead-man walking (acting like you're out to get the drop on people). Also, dead men don't talk...so don't tell people where the enemy is after you get out.
Just some good advice. I see lots of new guys to the sport doing all of these things.

You'd have to talk to the refs at the local fields. I've seen both be used on occasion, but they're not very common.

I've not heard many bad things about WE products at all, certainly not recent ones, they've really stepped up their game in the last few years.
They're definitely one of the makes I always see recommended; certainly for GBBs. They don't make many AEGs at the moment but they've recently brought out a SCAR that's been well received.
Since you're in the UK if you need anything gas blowback related I'd recommend speaking to Milspec Solutions They stock pretty much everything WE sell, along with some other makes and they really know their stuff about GBBs! Iain is a pretty cool dude as well and he should be happy to help you.

Hello gents, how's it going?
So had my first "proper" airsoft game yesterday, and absolutely loved it. Got caught in Hurricane Bertha (don't laugh Americans, it was worse than I'm used to!) and got soaked to the scrotum, but still loved it.
Just a couple of questions:
I noticed that my bb's were changing direction about 20m donwn range. Now that could be due to the weather , though the marshall didn't seem to think so. So what would I buy, when I get to that stage, to ensure my shots were getting as straight as possible?
Any recommendations on what I can buy to keep my grenades dry? I had some smoke grenades that stayed dry in my vest pouches, though the flash bangs I had were soaked and wouldn't even take from a lighter. I was thinking of wrapping them in cling film to peel off just before I used them. Would this work?
Thanks,
Si

Where the bb's diving, flying up, or just going everywhere? Also, what weight bb were you using?
As for the grenades...I think some kind of zip-lock bag would be your best bet.

Sounds like the issue with your bb's is down to the hop-up. Most AEGs have a little dial in where the ejection post is on a real weapon that you can adjust your hop-up with. Fiddle about with that to get the best accuracy.
Couple of different things can help accuracy - good quality ammunition, tight-bore barrel, and a good hop-up are the main ones in my experience.
As far as grenades go, for flash bangs I used to carry a few MP5 magazine pouches as they are well-sized for carrying the disposable bangs. Even when dry they can be a bit unreliable though, if you're getting into the game big-time and find yourself using pyro a lot it might be an idea to invest in a BFG (Blank Firing Grenade) or two. Initially quite expensive but worth it in the long run.
