I have custom dice for my Sisters that have a cool logo on the 6s. However, I am renowned for rolling 6s with these, which has led to a couple of complaints [and has made me worry a little that they have a bias]. However, when I let my opponents roll them a load of times to test them out, they can't roll a 6 for toffee, and I'm the same, except in game. I put it down to the Emperor's divine intervention.

However, if someone told me I couldn't use my cool themed dice which match the colour of my army, I would be pretty pissed off.

Honestly, when it comes to using symbols on dice, I prefer to stick to the kind where either the 1 or the 6 has a non-standard symbol. Being able to see your opponent's dice and read the results can be important, especially when playing against opponents you have never played against before. I think it is a sign of fair play and honesty when someone tells me which symbol is which on their dice and whether the symbol (if there is one) is on a 6 or a 1 or a 2 or whatever. I think it is a nice gesture that shows we are here to have fun and not just trying to win. After all, it is just a game, and if someone forgets to do this or doesn't do it in the first place for whatever reason, I don't hold it against them.

Finally, as to what I use, I do have the Munitorum dice, though they don't come with enough for my tastes (perhaps because they were meant to be markers rather than true dice?), instead I use the newer red dice that GW makes, and to avoid losing them, I just make sure to roll them on my half of the table.

I hate playing against someone who uses dice that have weird symbols for the numbers. Pips are fine but the other stuff is just annoying. " Oh okay I see a Horse and Cow is a 3 ,but Two Horses is a 1 and Chicken is the 6".

It's just annoying.

actually on second thought, I would actually use dice like that if they made them.

Not once have I ever lied about a siding, and always let them check. If you still think it makes me an unplayable opponent, you're probably a PITA, stuffy bore of an opponent, and chances are I wouldn't want to play against you either.

If people forget the meaning of your dice-symbols mid-game, it means the dice are annoying.
I wouldn't play against dice like that.
Either have all symbols represent a 6 or all as a 1. Mixing it is just extremely frustrating.

I personally hate the 1's and 6's symbol dice, but I don't tell people thay cant use them. I prefere to see 1's or 6's or pips repersenbting numbers, not stupid symbols. but thats just me.

Most major tournaments only require you to make your dice avaliable to your opponent to roll armor saves and similar.

So, my suggestion is become a little more open with your dice if they have problems (maybe they think they are 'loaded dice'. Encourage them to use them for thier armor saves. I think that will help them accept them as 'good dice'.

House rule: If a dice falls off the table, hits one of my models or shows something other than pips or a number then that roll counts as failed. If "failed" has no obvious definition then the player who did not make the roll chooses the outcome.

Well as long as they aren't loaded you can use whatever dice you want as long as they are all of the same kind and are easy to read from across the table.
Mixing dice that represent 1 with a symbol with dice that represent 6 with a symbol isn't the best of ideas.

If you use loaded dice I am gonna feed them to you along with some Tabasco sauce... That way you are gonna experience the same level of annoyance with the one I did while playing against you .

Actually the best dice for the job are casino dice. They look really nice they are easy to read and they are well balanced.

Aren't casino dice quite big? They're certainly expensive, even second hand.

No, you want a bucket of cheap dice small enough to grab them by the fistfull and clear enough that everyone knows what is going on.

Casino dice are called all the dice that are totally square with hard edges. You can find "casino" type dice that are in the same size as the chessex dice we now use.

Actually Casino Dice are the worst to use. They roll well for a long time but eventually through rolling them the sharp edges that they normally have and it may not be visible to you, wear down so that the dice now actually rolls along that wore down part of the dice. The reason by the way that casino dice are heavy is so that they can easily be thrown and reach the back of the table.

It's why dice are beveled or "rounded".

It's also why Casinos throw the dice away after a certain number of uses.

I dunno if people knew that.

Oh and another thing about "casino" dice, most of those dice that you buy that are that style are actually rejects. The casinos don't take all dice they recieve, they only take the most perfectly balanced ones so if they get dice and they feel their not great they'll either throw them away , drill them, or sendthem back to the manufacture.

So yeah , don't buy casino dice. Most of the time your getting the rejects from the casinos that sent them back, or they'll eventually with use become less "random".

And another thing about "Casino Dice", they're easy to palm. Casino Dice are designed that way to be bounced off the back wall to create more randomness. That's why you have to do it that way so that you don't palm the dice.

Like seriously, don't buy casino dice.

Yeah Square Edged dice are the worst you can get , they're the easiest to palm because they land "flat". meaning they have less tendency to roll.

It's why casinos make you bounce off a back wall so that you aren't palming their dice.

Seriously, don't buy Casino Dice. Especially "Drilled" casino dice because the weight will be off because they've drilled a hole in it.

Actually, most dice are not actually "random" Manufacturing processes are not perfect at all. You can actually buy 500 dice and then through just rolling them and counting out your results figure out which ones roll what more often. It's because well what we see as a flat surface actually may not be and the dice because of the bevel is off just a bit or the surface is, they'll roll statistically that number more often.

It's why buying "cheap " dice isn't a great idea. It's also why Casinos go with specific manufacturers that have high quality production and material so that this doesn't happen and then throw the dice away at the end of a shift so that they don't have "wear built up.

Just realized i know way to much about dice manufacturing.

I do love them but I just can't use them b/c they are so awkward.

That does not, by definition, make them the *worst* to use. It just means that if you get the second hand ones that they are now less good than they were new. It does not follow that this state of less-good is worse than the new state of e.g. chessex standard dice.

For example having slightly rounded edges, that are likely to have very near-even distribution, is still likely to be less of an issue than poorly weighted dice, especially where you have pits for pips as opposed to the clear dice such that niaturally the "6" side is lighter than the "1" side.

What you want are new backgammon dice - clear, quite large but can be smaller if you hunt around, and have filled numbers. Easy see and very, very clear to read from across the table. I use 20 in 3 different colours.

"Used" Casino dice have a hole drilled into them and that displaces the weight so that it's way less random.

Just casino dice you buy online and don't have that are not actually "casino" dice they just look like them with sharp edges. Sharp Edges get worn down with use, that's why they throw them the feth away. Casinos buy literally thousands of dice a month. Every shift they throw away or drill their dice. Usually they melt them down or just completely destroy them so people don't dig them out of the trash.

All dice are not truly "random" you can get pretty close though, also it's ridiculously easy to learn how to palm roll.

I just use whatever is most clear and prefer number dice to pips. I don't really super concern myself with the actual dice, but if you want to sperg out over dice you can cause there's a ton of different things that go into the actual manufacturing of dice.

Lots of discussions about dice lately. About casino dice, there's this artcle that was mentioned in a previous thread:
Most casinos use 3/4" (19mm) “razor-edge” precision dice for their craps tables. (The slightly smaller 11/16" craps die has apparently been retired.) Craps dice are designed to be thrown by the “shooter.” In order for the roll, or “shot,” to count, the dice must rebound off the far wall of the craps table. Among other things, this ensures that the dice tumble sufficiently. The razor-edge of these dice also works as a “brake” that inhibits tumbling after the dice have struck the wall, ensuring that the dice come to rest as quickly as possible thereafter. However, as precisely machined as razor-edge dice are, they are not ideal for other gaming applications. (Nor are their “feather,” or bevel-edged cousins much better.) If you were planning to use craps dice for board games, miniatures, or role-play games, think again.

The large size of craps dice is an obvious problem. Most dice cups and towers cannot accommodate dice of this size. Granted if you use a large tray or the game table, size is less of a problem. That said, getting your hand around six to ten 19mm dice at a time may be awkward for those playing Flames of War, or Warhammer. A less obvious problem is ensuring that these big boys get enough “action.” Even if you have a large tray, cup, or tower, 19mm dice may not tumble sufficiently to ensure a truly random outcome. Throwing these brutes across your game table is seldom practical either. The sharp edges of the dice may also damage the surface of your dice tray or tower, and will not be kind to felt, or soft leather.

Craps dice are precision dice. But using craps dice in a way that they were not intended to be used defeats the purpose of all that careful engineering. If you want to ensure as much randomness as possible, we recommend that you use a precision die that suits the game being played. Professional backgammon players use ball-cornered dice for some very good reasons. All this is to say that if you are tempted to purchase craps dice, be aware that they are less than ideal for most game applications.

Yeah , I don't disagree that casino dice are precision. I just disagree that for long term use they're gakky as they can become cracked , chipped , and worn down.

It's why Casinos throw them away. They're super accurate starting off then after use they become less so. Also thats not like a "use once in a game throw a way" but if you use them for a few years they'll eventually become less accurate. Plus feth you if you use casino dice and hit my models with them.

Something that's not taken into account btw.

What I understand is that casino dice are more balanced cause no material is removed from the edges. It is much easier to make a perfect cube than make cube with really curved edges.

I found the following bellow. They are 12mm which aren't bigger than chessex they are square and they are cheap. I think I am gonna buy 40 of them or something

It's a risk/reward, Square Edges are more accurate, they just wear down and can become chipped and become less accurate over time. If you play like 1 game a week with them it wont effect it at all really but if your using them all the time and rough with them expect some chipping etc..

I dunno I actually hate Casino dice because inevitably one get's lose and knocks my guys over like bowling pins and that drives me crazy.

A couple people roll in boxes I don't like it if the sides are too high and you can't see. But if the edges are low and you can easily see I kinda like it b/c you can give the dice a good throw.

For me, (and this is true of most of my group)

1: If you are using dice with abnormal symbols let me know before you roll what those symbols represent.
2: if your dice might damage the table/models roll them elsewhere.

we had a player for a while who used Iron dicehttp://geek-news.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/crop-001.jpg
. these dice are a HORRIBLE combination of abnormal shape, numbering scheme, and irregular material. At the time, we played on a board that was made primarily from pink insulation foam.

I can't believe that this game is so scrutinized, it's fans so bleakly categorized, that even the colouration of pips on a dice is a topic for scathing debate!

The very idea that it should matter that much, on either side of the table, that people would be so willing to cheat, or to be on guard for cheating.

Black dice with black pips then! Watch the coronaries!

Having dice with symbols on both the 1 and 6 in the same batch is acceptable in only the most casual of play environments. It's asking your opponent to trust you a lot, and not just because you'd intentionally cheat, but because I've seen players forget major pieces of wargear. Expecting a player to remember that skulls are 1s while Dakka Bursts are 6s is just implausible.

The Warcmachine dice are pretty uniformly detested in the community, but some players love them, and you can't exactly ban PP official products, you know? But they are aggressively difficult to read.
