40k. Are you competitive, fluff or friendly?
Fluffy and friendly. As for competitive, I use my own rules for
40k and being competitive when you're the one hosting the game, implementing and arbitrating the rules is a dick move.
What's the age range of the community and what's the most popular armies on dakka.
Locally we have a split community. There's a
GW store in the next city over and it's full of 14 year olds who buy from there. Then there's a gaming club where everyone is an adult and buys from online discounters, forge world and recasters (with the last source growing in percentage of spending). I personally buy from third part figure makers like Kromlech, Anvil Industries, Dreamforge and others.
Also how do you feel about GW and the decisions they make?
When we got a letter from their lawyers about a bloodbowl fan site that was totally legal and complied with their policies and recommendations for fansites, I was left with a decision. Spend money on a lawyer and fight it, or walk away. I walked away. Others involved in the site complied with
GW's demands. Anyone who does business with a company who tries to legally bully them is a chump stuck in an abusive relationship. So I still enjoy the
40k universe using my existing books from the 80s and 90s and miniatures made by people other than
GW. And I use rules not made by
GW. And paints not made by
GW. Games Workshop is 100% irrelevant to my40k on the tabletop.
If I had anything I'd like readers to take away from this, it would be to wonder what it would be like if you took complete ownership of your own hobby and shifted to supporting smaller companies who are doing what they do for the love of the hobby. You might be able to get superior paints and hobby tools for less money. Miniatures that work great in the
40k aesthetic made by sculptors who do it out of love and rules made to stand on their own merits as rules rather than be marketing material to sell more models. Just think about it. Just consider it.
