Only working part-time and not having a social life outside of gaming helped a lot there, back in the day.

If the store has a reference copy of every codex, that saves you a lot of money. A new army means new books, too.
The store's idea is good, and a battleforce can be a good way to get into these. Add a blister-pack if the box isn't enough, and you've covered yourself for a couple of months.
but, if painting is required, use Blue-tack or pinning to help dismantle them later on.
